Last night I dreamt that Ann explained on her blog that Ducky was gay. Let's see if I can reconstruct the story...
Apparently (per my dream) Ann had just plotted out a scene where Kristy and Mary Anne have a fight because they both want to date Logan [um]. And she heard that [made up percentage] of fights between boys or men are over women they both are into romantically/sexually, and that she'd never write such a scene because a) she doesn't write from male points of view and b) all the boys she writes are like, geekchic (actually not true because dude, Logan? Anyhow.) This segued into how one of the male points of viewshe Peter Lerangis wrote was gay. See if you can guess which one!
Okay, I'm kind of loving this sequence of dreams. For my next trick, can I dream CJ/Tara?

hermionesviolin, of course]. It was quite awesome because we are quite awesome, in the sense that we are complete dorks. So gleee! a selection of awesome things we did:
1. We went through the Secret Slasha archive and determined how many of the pairings each of us had written previously.
2. I gave Elizabeth her birthday card (much belated), and she gave me a free t-shirt she got at the screening of Juno she saw.
3. We discussed our shared hobbies, by which you probably think I mean watching TV, but really, it's mostly tagging our LiveJournals.
4. And we concluded the day with a candlelit dinner (but in a gen way, I swear).
5. And in an item unrelated to my day with Elizabeth, I read Ducky Diary 3 on my ride home. It is possibly my favorite book ever. Every time I read it I get a little less worried that it will turn out wrong (by which I mean, failure of Ducky to be gayest ever) and a little more squeeful about how totally gay Ducky really is. Sigh.
6. (BONUS!) Yuletide feedback! :)

1. I started planning sign-ups for next year's Yuletide and Secret Slasha.

Oct. 20th, 2007 05:25 pm1. Apparently Hotmail is rejecting LJ comments, which would explain why I've not been getting any. NOT ON, HOTMAIL. I have temporarily switched to my rl account -- I changed my mind and finally created a fannish gmail account. I have 100s and 100s of messages archived in my hotmail account, so I need to remember to check it too, so they don't all disappear.
And so far, Gmail doesn't seem to be delivering comment notifications either. HOW CAN I KEEP UP WITH THINGS if technology does not cooperate?

I'm reading The Ethics of Star Trek for school. It kind of sucks, but there's so much TOS OTP, not to mention a long discussion about which is the superior pairing, O'Brien/Bashir or Kirk/Spock. They came down firmly on the Kirk/Spock side. (Okay, okay. This was not couched in the language of OTP. But CLEARLY that's what it was really about.) Also, there was a Janeway/Seven moment that made me squeal. And I have seen NONE of that series. (Well, one episode, maybe.)

I will comment on the drabbleset next; first I wanted to reexamine this, since I've been meaning to do since I wrote it. The pieces work in a weird kind of tandem for me. This piece is very internal, because Ducky is very internal, because even in the Diaries-series, Ducky is the most self-reflective character and so much of his arc happens inside his own brain. "Nine Rules" is an external piece, not reflective at all, very physical in ways that I'll talk about more when I discuss that. "Nine Rules" is about characters I don't feel especially resonant, at least not in surface ways; none of them are characters I write very often or feel very confident about writing. "Reflections" on the other hand is about a character I identify with a great deal and always have. "Nine Rules" is not about race; only one of the nine drabbles even mentions race as an explicit issue. This piece is all about race; writing a canonically white character as black and not talking in detail about race would be counterproductive.
With that in mind, line-by-line commentary. This will spoil through CA Diaries book 15.

If I were to make up a name, it would be something like this: Dawn Is Really, Really, Really, Really Gay For Mary Anne. This is the most MA/D book since #4, and really, there's only one conclusion I can draw:
In the BSCverse, California makes you gay! How else can you explain Ducky?
This book also contains Stephie, whom you might remember from California Girls as Mary Anne's underage girlfriend. (NB: I am just kidding about that part. Stephie is no more gay for Mary Anne than Charlotte is for Stacey) and the other three members of the W♥KC, before they got retconned out of existence.
Ducky makes zero (0) appearances. :(

The Secret To Contentment, According to Ducky McCrae: Worry about how you look in the morning, because even though you can't bring yourself to wear boring conservative clothes, you don't want to risk setting off the Cro Mags. And make sure you don't bounce too much as you're walking into school, because Marco the Cro Mag will say you're FLITTING, which makes everyone laugh. If you survive THAT, you're off to a good start, and IF YOU'RE LUCKY you'll have a few laughs with your 13-year-old friends, the only ones who seem to appreciate you, and when you go home, yoiu'll find that your brother has not left the milk out of the fridge all day and has actually bought a few groceries and maybe run a load of laundry with some of your stuff in it. THAT'S contentment. And that's pathetic.

Another thing I didn't know till flipping through the site was that Paula Dangzinger died in 2004. *is sad, for loved Danzinger* The Cat Ate My Gymsuit pretty much helped me survived middle school.

I totally get the feeling from her site/public interviews (and wow, trying to glean the truth from those is wicked harder than reading Joss interviews because she's talking to her intended audience which, oddly enough, is considerably younger than I am) that she's grown past the BSC, and she rarely mentions the CA Diaries at all. This makes me woeful.
And now I've landed on TWoP, which is a sure sign that it's time to go to bed.
ETA: TWoP says she's gay. Can TWoP be wrong? Answer: well, durr! But still![/eta]
