Oh, flist (dwircle), it's the weekend! \o/

Other excellent things:

1. I came home* to two unexpected messages from people I love. :)

*apparently by this I mean "to the internet". ?

2. I got gas for the car just after the indicator light went on.

3. I bought a new bookcase and 4 frozen pizzas.

4. One of the nice lads playing American football in my apartment complex's parking lot carried bookcase from my car to the house because I asked for help :) *most outgoing*

5. I am up to The B♗shop at the Lake in my non-thorough Blackie Ryan reread. It's a British country home mystery! With Blackie! I'm pretty excited about it.

6. I bought Snuff last night. I'm looking forward to it.

7. Baaaaaby planet. (Okay, I just wanted to say that since I heard it on NPR.)

From Alan Turing: The Enigma, on the death of his first love, Christopher Morcom: [Alan] had surrendered half his mind, only to have it drop into a void.

From [livejournal.com profile] thousandpages, who officially tagged the whole list, ten things that make me happy:
1. Nightly glee. This isn't really redundant, because the act of recalling and verbalizing daily joys itself makes me a happier person.
2. [livejournal.com profile] gvambat.
3. Fannish things, specifically this year, new episodes of House and Veronica Mars, and, more generally, anticipating stuff like Peacekeeper Wars last year and Serenity this year and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince somewhere in between.
4. My father and my sister, as well as my extended paternal family (when they aren't trying to make me dance.)
5. Book-daze. When you're reading a long and meaty novel and can think of nothing else for days and are pretty much living in that world and even when you finish, you've got this lingering feeling that you're just waking up from the most fantastic dream you've ever had.
6. Getting feedback on fic.
7. Philippians 4:4. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Also known as my Christianity in a nutshell.
8. Dar Williams songs.
9. Snail mail (and email) from old friends and new.
10. Being able to articulate complex ideas.

I've yet to respond to comments re: drabbles. I'll do so as soon as I post this.

I have today off, and that's making me happy and groovy. I even woke up before noon!

It's Ash Wednesday. Blessed Lent to all those who are observing it.

I'm not sure exactly yet what I'm doing for Lent. I don't really think of it as giving something up with the implication that, well, the implication is usually that it's sort of a pointless exercise in self-deprivation. Lent should never be pointless. The point of Lenten devotion (including fasting, broadly defined), as I understand it, is twofold. First, Lent is an exercise in spiritual discipline. By the very act of intentionally doing anything, we are reminded daily throughout the season that we belong to God. Second, by cutting out the extraneous things in our lives, we make room for God, make ourselves holy vessels for God's presence. I think we (and I know often I) use Lent as a time of self-improvement. Which is not bad in and of itself, and I've broken some bad habits (i.e., Baby-Sitters Club books in sixth grade, and if you don't think that was a bad habit, you don't know how good that crack is.) over Lent. And I don't want to imply that any way of "doing Lent" is wrong or bad, just that I think that at its core, Lent is about making yourself good for God.

I am feeling so spiritually empty lately. I haven't been to church in a month for various reasons but even when I go to church, I feel empty. Ugly, and tired, and bored. I crave ashes. I crave Ash Wednesday. I crave ashes on my forehead pressed to my skin a reminder that I am God's that I am dust and ashes. There's a service at the Presbyterian church but I probably won't go because I have tutoring.

Ash Wednesdays past.
