"you, Jessi."

"Oh. Well, not too surprising, huh? Not like you'd expect a black girl to make it to the final four."

"Jessi."

"Claud?"

"Look, this probably isn't the best time, since you're about to jump out of a balloon and will probably be dead soon, but, um, not everything happens to you because you're black. I mean, sometimes. Some people just suck. But some people are good. Some people look past skin color, right?"

"The people who are about to throw me out of a balloon?"

"Okay, point taken."

"Can we save the philosophy for sometime when we're not all about to die?"

"Yes, Miss Kristy, Queen of the Universe."

"What did you just call me?"

"I've been wanting to say that for a long time," Jessi said, and, tossing her head to show off her long, graceful neck, she jumped.

"Just us four, huh?" said Dawn. "Pity that we're still going down."

"Yeah..." said Kristy, and pulled another slip of paper from her pocket. "Well, that one says 'Mallory' -- um, Claud? Mallory's name had two l's in it."

"Doesn't matter now," Claudia said. "Who's next?"

And Kristy pulled out another name.

*laughs* I went to high school with this kid Chip, one of whose parents was Kenyan, and he was sometimes kind of a troublemaker and was forever being all "It's because I'm black," as a joking attempt to get out of trouble, all "You're being mean to me because I'm black" and we were like, "No, Chip, it's because you're an idiot."

So let's see, that bit was a shout-out to the discussions of AMM&co. doing the heavy-handed diversity thing. And Claud misspelling Mallory's name was a shout-out to Layna's complaint. I am such a litgeek, huh? 'Cause then I'm like, "Look, Final Four! It's funny because Final Four is basketball, and black men are disproportionately represented in basketball, but Ari's not a sports fan, so I bet that layerful irony was not entirely intentional" and I'm noting the playing with BSC tropes ("long, graceful neck"!) and yeah, shutting up now.

Elizabeth, my dear, are you analyzing the literary content of my balloon polls? :p

And yeah, most of that was unintentional -- although I think melwil and I had discussed briefly once upon a time Jessi's over-sensativity about her race, which I thought was worth including at whatever point she went over.

Balloon polls on the whole feel rather ridiculous to me (which obviously doesn't preclude my voting in them, though this is only the second one I've voted in) and textual geeking is like what I *do.*

I honestly don't recall oversensitivity about her race on Jessi's part, but we well know that I have minimal recall of BSC canon.

Mmm... "Kid-Kit."
