Morning Afternoon, flist. I am awake and theoretically jobhunting, which apparently means sitting on the couch reading the flist and drinking coffee in my pajamas. Ohmygod I don't even. Anyhow, this is all apropos of nothing. I should post about church and such (and maybe take pictures of our awesome apartment) at some point, but in less personal news:

+2010 US Census Won't Count Same-Sex Marriages. I read that and tried not to cry.

+It's [livejournal.com profile] ibarw [International Blog Against Racism Week]! Not that it's not always, but this is a time when fandom and friends traditionally focus our attention more closely on racial issues, both in fandom and outside of it.

Guidelines:
If you would like to participate, here's what to do:

1. Announce the week in your blog.

2. Switch your default icon to either an official IBARW icon, or one which you feel is appropriate. To get an official IBARW icon, you may modify one of yours yourself or ask someone to do so. Here's a round up of IBARW icons.

3. Post about race and/or racism: in media, in life, in the news, personal experiences, writing characters of color, portrayals of race in fiction, review a book on the subject, etc. (Linking back here is highly appreciated!) The optional theme this year is intersectionality.

[livejournal.com profile] polymexina was telling me about susan sontag and annie leibovitz today, and I thought of you.

"The two met at a photo shoot in 1988, when Leibovitz took publicity pictures for Sontag's book, Aids And Its Metaphors. Leibovitz was 39, Sontag 55." -guardian.co.uk
We talk about the issue of Newsweek that displayed 16 pages of images from "A Photographer's Life" and identified Sontag, a bit absurdly, as "the person she was closest to for that decade and a half." Jon Stewart mocked the Newsweek euphemism on "The Daily Show," and a New York Times interviewer wrote that Leibovitz refused to say "partner" or "companion" to describe Sontag's role in her life, implying that she dodged the issue.

"With all due respect to Susan," Leibovitz says, "we never liked words like 'companion' or 'partner.' Susan never used them. I never used them." The couple never lived together, but they were indisputably soul mates. "It was a relationship in all its dimensions. It had its ups and downs. ... I mean, we helped each other through our lives."

"Call us 'lovers,' " Leibovitz says. "I like 'lovers.' You know, 'lovers' sounds romantic. I mean, I want to be perfectly clear. I love Susan. I don't have a problem with that. I just had a problem with 'partner' or 'companion.' It just sounds like two little old ladies."

-SFGate
And polymexina said, "sontag writes a lot about photography and its ability to act as a second eye/lens for history and culture. so it's neat they were lovers, since she's the theory/impact of the image on pop culture and leibovtz has made her career off being able to reflect pop culture in her images."
