Character: Miriam
Sweet Victory
Miriam went into the water without fear. Unbidden, a smile played at her lips. Walls of water towered to her left and right, filled with fish frozen in midswim. The path through the water was rough with shells, but no Hebrew had tender feet, and no Hebrew stopped for aching heals, for blistered toes. No Hebrew stopped in the water to dance, to pray, and every Hebrew hurried. Miriam had no hurry, and no fear. She had seen her brother delivered from the waters of Mother's womb, and she had seen him safely delivered from the water to a princedom. He would be delivered again in safety. From endless waters to endless freedom, Moses was delivered, so Miriam walked without haste over rocks and shells, the small hills of sand and sediment that tides made. She looked ahead to her kinspeople, anxious already, complaining already, and she thought about the Egyptians behind, hurrying and careless, and the death that hung in the walls of water.
Life emerged from water, great gushes of liquid that filled the womb with safety, and life relied on water, fresh and daily, but water, too, could take life, in the agonizing slowness of a universal flood or in a single moment, the Red Sea crashing to its wonted course, devouring like an angry beast all pursuers, horse and rider, lost forever to the water whence they came.
The LORD, too, gave life, sustained life, devoured life in great gulps and in slow sips. The water, like all creation, sang at His command, and Miriam, like all creation, lifted her hands and voice and gave praise with dance and timbals for the salvation He had wrought, the exodus He had engineered, the waves that answered to His word.
As evening became morning became evening, Miriam and her people walked the wilderness, and as morning became evening became morning, they laughed with praise.
