changing horses in midstream
Jul. 6th, 2003 11:20 amSleep is good. If I'd gotten more sleep last night, I wouldn't be in this state now. Right. Long story. My dad is in his mid-fifties and is slightly hard of hearing. So you have to talk loudly around him. No big deal, but my sister, who's never been very good at enunciating, tends not to speak up around Dad, so he's constantly going "What?" Okay, not constantly, but at least daily.
Now. Backstory. My sister is 7 years younger than me. I've always been her protector, advocate, go-between. I know a lot of you are older siblings, so you know what I mean. Even though she's a total brat 90% of the time, she's still my sister and I've got to look out for her. Because I was so in-between--a kid like her, but articulate like an adult--I always interpreted for her. When she was very young, I was often the only one who could understand her lisp. I spent a lot of my life translating for her because no one else could. So. Today.
Sister: I think I might be able to go to VBS after all.
Dad: What?
Me: She said she thinks she might be able to go to VBS after all!
Dad: Why don't you let her repeat it? She needs to learn to speak more loudly; I don't need a translator!
Me: *tears forming*
Dad: I don't need your help in order to understand her. Why do you do that?
Me: Because for many years, I was the only one who could understand her! *fights back tears*
I don't know why this upset me so much. But it did.
