drabble: original fic. "Facts"
Nov. 26th, 2005 11:12 pmG. Gen. Thanksgiving in space. 100 words.
Facts
Facts: Harvest festivals are anachronistic in their timeless, non-terran lifestyle. Today is just Thursday. At some point the bountiful gifts of an invisible Corn God become less meaningful -- unnamable, even, in the new binary languages -- than the results of their own labors. Human hands made the devices that compress nutrients into food; human hands built the ship that keeps vacuum out and life signs strong.
The idea of ritual is itself an anachronism; they rationalize into habits the once sacred annual motions of birth and growth, of bountiful and lean days.
Facts: Today is Thursday. They are grateful.

Date: 2005-11-27 04:34 am (UTC)(Nitpick: Fic opens with "Fact" but ends with "Facts." Is there supposed to be noun agreement?)

Date: 2005-11-27 04:40 am (UTC)(I think that was intentional? But on consideration, I might change the first "fact" to "facts" for better flow.)

Date: 2005-11-27 04:52 am (UTC)Oh, and I forgot by the time I finished actually reading the fic, but I saw the mood first and was like, "I'm 'popular,' whee! :)"
(Yeah, I wasn't sure, 'cause the switch to a plural emphasizes the final two sentences as distinct thoughts -- though obviously they're related -- and one can read the opening two paragraphs as an extended single fact, like an encyclopedia entry.)
