Sep. 30th, 2005 08:30 amYay! Four and a half hours till I see the BDM! Then I'll need a new spoilers icon!
*bounces*
Also: done with the first 4 seasons of West Wing. I've started to dig into the extras, and am thinking about how to approach the possibility of maybe one day ficcing this show. (I know, I know, such clear goals!) I feel as if there are huge barriers to that happening, relating to me not being Aaron Sorkin, and would like to talk about that, as well as why I can't cross WW and the Jossverse in my head (mostly relating to Sorkin!=Whedon, and the huge influence those men had on shaping everything about the shows) and about the psychology of the crossover.
But right now I'm wondering how to maintain my squee for four and a half hours on no sleep while hanging at the mall and reading something that isn't Serenity.
Meanwhile, this song is love.
Have excellent Serenity-opening-days, everyone! To those of you who, you know, aren't fans, um, entertain yourselves however you would normally! Have a great day, everyone!

Date: 2005-10-01 09:48 am (UTC)This may be my astonishing arrogance talking, but I think I find West Wing *easier* to write than either BtVS or SG-1. I mean, five fics in three months is *not* like me. It might be as much to do with the fact that WW fandom is much smaller than BtVS or 'Gate and hence there's a lot less distraction in the form of other people's fics, and by the same token less to live up to.
On the other hand: as a 'verse, WW isn't one I feel particularly comfortable playing in because I can't pick up the politics threads very well, 'cause of the British thing. The Jossverse and Gateverses are so fluid and made out of imagination/fantasy that perhaps they lend themselves to fanfic better than a verse based on realworld-like events. But the WW characters themselves came very easily to me - moreso than anyone but Giles and Willow (who I'd be watching for 6+ years before I ficced them) And, as I've mentioned before, the WW characters now have, in some cases, personal fanon of their own in my brain - which is a first.
But my comfort in WW may just as likely be due to growing writerly confidence and finding a One True CharacterTM in Toby. *shrugs*
How did you find the end of season 4 btw? Babies with hats, anyone? ;)

I would squee over Serenity with you but am a heathen person as yet uninitiated into FF. And we Brit-types don't get Serenity for another week. *sob*

Date: 2005-10-01 08:26 pm (UTC)I think my big reservations don't so much have to do with characterization as with... style. Because WW is 90% dialogue and I try to plunge in and write like, three pages of dialogue with no intervening thoughts or emotions and then I sigh and realize I need to think about this more. They all wrap their words around them like armor and I don't know how to write them without that frenetic dialogue to protect them.
