sg-wun+'lantis for the very first time
Sep. 11th, 2005 01:54 amSo, my girlfriend sent me the first seven episodes each of Stargate: SG-1 S9 and Stargate: Atlantis S2. Thoughts, shallow to say the least, lie below the cut. Heavy OTP bias, as you might predict, but I show openness! Rated R for innuendo, silliness, bad language, and homosexual and heterosexual pervy thoughts about everyone who may or may not show up. Vague spoilers for Farscape and Angel. No spoilers past episodes 7 ("Ex Deus Machina" and "Instinct"), and if you should happen to spoil me past there in the comments, I will kill you. Just sayin'. Disclaimer: I would not actually internet!kill anyone, and love you all very much.
Without further ado:
Stargate: SG-1 9x01: "Avalon"
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
This was bad. Really bad. But in an adorable, crackful way that made me love all the actors so very, very much. I mean, clearly, CB and BB are having a totally awesome time, and CJ too, to some extent... I really got that impression. The "wheee, we're having so much fun!" sense. Especially from BB. Which brings me to:
A. Cameron Mitchell, or, John Crichton not-in-space:
He was lovely. I am utterly enamored of Ben Browder's acting, and to this role he brought, how shall I say... energy. He brought the sense that he was doing something amazing and new, and that made Cameron feel just right -- energized, excited, a fanboy of SG-1 without being too, well, Andrew Wells-y about it. He's a fanboy with something to offer, and he's like a softer, gentler early John Crichton. It really makes me miss Farscape, but then, that's kind of what it's supposed to do, right? Free publicity for 'Scape?
Anyhow, I really dig Cameron. He's bringing back the S1!Daniel innocence of spirit, and that's totally rocking me hardcore. It would normally annoy me to have an entire first episode devoted entirely to a new character, but since I already have great love for BB, I was willing to forgive them.
The infirmary scene was *awesome*. Especially Jack in the infirmary scene. Awww.
B. Jack O'Neill
Man, I love Jack, really, and I miss him SO MUCH. I was sad that they wasted his one scene this episode on a conversation with the New General Whose Name I Don't Know. I would have wished they'd've not... but I get that S8 was goodbye to Jack. *sigh* I miss Jack. Love that he finally gets to retire, though, and love the scene with Cameron -- "you can do anything you want. Professionally. I mean, anything. Well... not anything." EEEEEEEEEE!
C. Samantha Carter
I wished there was more Sam. Uh, the end?
D. Daniel Jackson
I am already writing in my head the Sam 'n' Daniel go to Atlantis and stay there forever with Weir and McKay AU. 'Nuff said. Also, Daniel's not so bad looking, with the beard, though it's a bit, uh, painful? Yeah. Anyhow, I love that they are, all of them, packing up their bags and leaving. You know? It's like, "We were ready for this to be over." And then Cameron has to say, "No, guys, please! I just got onboard. I need you guys to see me through this."
E. Vala I Can't Pronounce Her Last Name
Hee. I liked her better here than in "Prometheus Unbound." Mostly she was just amusing, and the Daniel/Vala banter was amusing, but hey. You take what you can get. Also, she's ridiculously hot.
F. Plot
In which, once again, the SG writers prove they are just as creative as, um, fanfic writers. The bracelet of we-must-be-together? King Arthur? Puh-leeze. Anyhow, watching Stargate for the plot is like reading Playboy for the articles, as we'd do well to remember.
G. Daniel/Vala
I can see why this might be the next big thing sweeping fandom, what with the banter and the hotness and all, but frankly, I'm not *totally* loving it.
H. Cameron/Sam
Aww. John has a crush on Sam. I've totally read that fic.
I. Daniel/Teal'c/Sam
Are still my OT3.
J. Jack/Daniel/Sam
This is canon, right? Still? Despite the total lack of scenes together?
K. "You I haven't met. I'm sure I would remember that."
I was waiting for the Meta Moment, and this certainly sufficed, as did Vala winking at Cameron when she said, "I'm pregnant. There's a one in ten chance it's yours [daniel's]." That was ADORABLE
L. Crackfic on drugs
Really, this felt mostly like a crack crossover fic to me. It was fun and bouncy and there were lots of adorable moments and it made me jump up and down a lot and squee over the Daniel! and John! and Aeryn! and Teal'c!, but it didn't feel any more substantive than that. And I'm really torn on the issue of having CB and BB both in this show, given, well, um... incestuousness? It's just weird.
But on the whole I really did like the emotional plot, with the SG-1 ready to go their separate ways and Cameron being this adorable, innocent boy who just wants to fly who thinks they're his damn heroes and being, "Guys! Let's get to work! Please!" He serves the same role that Cordelia does on AtS. Drags them out of their ready to give up-ness and says, "Hey. This? This is really cool."
Aw. Yeah.
Stargate: Atlantis 2x01 "The Siege Part III"
Okay! Awwww! It took me awhile to get back into this, because of all the kerflufflage over McKay, and I thought, wait, wait, this is the man I remember! Wow! Shock! I really, really love him. And Weir is so damn *attractive*. Just, gah. So pretty.
A. Plot
Decent. I thought the Asgard was cute. And I always enjoy Zelenka and McKay doing the science twins thing with each other. And, um, more on Plot in the Ford section.
B. John Sheppard
Still not my favorite, but I think distance and less obvious Jack-isms have given me some measure of respect for him. I mean, not going to be a favorite, but won't make watching intolerable like Dylan does with Drom.
C. Elizabeth Weir
So. Fucking. Attractive. I think she seemed... softer, somehow, in this. More gentle, more feminine. Maybe I really have misremembered her as My Ideal Woman, but I don't think so... she's so pretty, though! Eee!
D. Rodney McKay
Eeee! I love that he's still all... self-centered. "Protect me. And the ZPM. But me, too. I'm right, right, Elizabeth?" Um. Yes.
E. Aiden Ford
Okay, this will be a complicated one, or at least, more complicated than the others, because I really was a Ford fangirl. And it broke my heart to see him disobeying Sheppard like that. And as a Beckett/Ford fangirl, well. *dies of sad* Poor Ford. I was pretty much spoiled for this happening, but it still made me sad. Also, it gives Sheppard a quest, though. *squee* I love quests. [and, um, that wasn't actually all that complicated, was it?]
F. Teyla
Pleasantly surprised by her saving McKay's life and being sweet and snarky and kick-ass. I felt a lot like she was wandering around in the background and they didn't really have something for her to do, but, well, first episode of the season. They're allowed to do that, I guess. And thanks to
scrollgirl, I can appreciate how pretty she is. Which is very. Elizabeth Weir and Teyla should have sex. They would be pretty together.
G. Carson Beckett
Poor baby! I was so hoping the UST with Ford would get resolved. But no. It did not.
H. Radec Zelenka
He is just adorable wherever he goes. :)
I. McKay/Weir
Heh. I want to start here just to remind everyone that the OTP hasn't gone anywhere, that I still believe. Because, yeah. There wasn't an awful lot in this episode (and dammit, I'm going to have to watch "The Eye" AGAIN. Because, because, pretty. Cuddling in the rain. Just to remind myself it actually, yanno happened.) Anyhow, this episode wasn't exactly high on the list of 'shippy favorites. There was, um, significant eye contact! And calling each other by first names. And I'm out.
J. Sheppard/Weir
Eee! I admit, when there was that scene when Sheppard came back from the Deadelus? And they looked at each other, and then she jumped him? I was totally convinced that they were going to kiss and... I was going to be okay with that. My McKay/Weir depends on McKay loving Weir forever and ever, above all else, but she is allowed to have a torrid love affair with Sheppard and break McKay's heart.
Also, the usual suspects (in this case,
rosewildeirish and
mylittleredgirl) have made me write this pairing often enough that I kind of um, like it. Sort of. If I forget about the OTP for a moment. It's tense, and pretty, and they're... okay, I might think there are canonical feelings between them? I'm not sure. Yeah.
K. Ford/Teyla
She called him Aiden!!! First name kink = GO.
L. McKay/Teyla
They had a really cute scene. And I adore it when people are all toppy on McKay. And I was sad because Weir was like, you can take the afternoon off. And then Teyla was like, yes, and then all the Wraith will come and EAT YOU. And then Zelenka was like, uh, Rodney? Come look at this. So I liked Teyla in that role. It was sweet.
M. Sheppard/Ford
My. They really are in love, aren't they? I thought it was pretty much one-sided, but this pretty much proved that Sheppard's feelings for Ford are just as strong. Yay epic quest! It's much like Daniel's quest to find Sha're. And since my Sheppard/Ford is very much old skool top/bottom-y (as I've already revealed yesterday that I like my boyslash with a significant power differential, much like I [sometimes] like my het with a significant age differential, this should surprise no one), it was really heart-breaking to see Ford disobeying Sheppard. *Waaaaah!*
N. Ford/Beckett
I have a Sekrit Fondness for this pairing. I dunno why. I have plenty of secondary OTPs that don't interfere with McKay/Weir, but this is probably my favorite of them. It's the love-hate thing. I think I've converted it into my own private Harry/Draco. And I don't like Harry/Draco. But I love the idea that they should be so damned snippy with each other all the time because they're secretly harboring love for each other. It helps that they're both on the same side in the Great War Epic Drama Of Our Time, that the differences between them are personal but more to do with philosophies of life than anything else. It also might arise from me having watched "The Eye" ten trillion times. Yeah.
Anyhow, this episode was full-to-the-brim of Beckett being adorable and caring for Ford. And it was very sad when Ford tried to kill him. Poor Carson. <3 him liek whoa. Um, anyhow. Really do love both of them. They should be having not-really-hate-sex RIGHT NOW. *sigh*
Stargate: SG-1 9x02 "Avalon part 2"
....................!
On the exciting new threeway crackcrossoverficofDOOM, Rommie replaces Janet as the... okay, I'm just going to boggle over that one for awhile.
Meanwhile, Aeryn dies in Daniel's arms, and John is very sad about this, as is Daniel, and Sam is nowhere to be seen.
Things are going badly in Jaffa World, ensuring Teal'c's loyalty to the Tau'ri for another season.
And Rommie has been dating the new General Whose Name I Don't Know, and omgwtf Rommie/Aeryn/John/Daniel are all in the same episode and it's canon for frell's sake this is crazy!
I was sad when Vala was all burny-like. It was sad. But then she got unburny and John no longer needs to, like, kill everything.
+++
On a slightly more serious note, I adored the symbolism (subtle, as 'Gate always is) of Cameron pulling the sword from the stone to prove his worthiness. I just liked it. Purity of heart and strength of spirit. Cameron/Daniel is halfway to becoming a new OTP.
And as Gvambat points out, it's pretty much canon that Jack has given Cameron his blessing to fuck any of his teammates if he should do desire. ("You can do... anything you want. Anything. May I suggest Daniel? Excellent handjobs, that's our Daniel. And Carter is..." okay, stopping now.)
Oh, and "A room full of treasure, and Daniel Jackson finds the one book." Hee. Cameron/Daniel=OTP.
Remain convinced that someone on the writing staff was watching Farscape and decided that what they needed, what they really needed, was John Crichton, and someone was like, Hey! That show was canceled, wasn't it? Why don't we call up Ben Browder and ask him?
And Ben Browder's like, "Know what? Sure. That sounds great. So, would I actually be playing John again? Because I think there might be copyright issues..."
Writer: No, of course not! You'll be playing an officer in the US military with a sense of innocence and a spirit of adventure. Oh, and we're thinking you should have sexual tension with Claudia Black's character."
Ben Browder:.... does DK know about this?
Quick poll:
[Poll #568336]
...and the cliffhanger actually made me gasp with the "that's so not fair!"
I'm still in the "this is just cracked-out" zone when it comes to guest starrage, but I'm getting excited about my shows again.
Stargate: Atlantis 2x02 "The Intruder"
Ignoring all semblance of plot... I am pleased to discover that McKay under pressure is indeed as panicky and charming as I remembered. With the "I peel easily" and the "how much air IS there in these things?" 'Twas cute. Felt vaguely OT3ish thought.
I liked the Sheppard/Weir bit at the beginning, with them both having insomnia. Love insomnia!kink. And, and, and...
I love Weir so much. I think she's the character with the most fully fleshed-out character... and I love her. The way she's not an adventurer, says as much, the way she was really, all along, hoping, hoping that Simon would be the one. That he could come back with her. I felt like, all along, that was really what she was hoping for. You know? It's very sweet of her. And Narim's all like, "No, see Jack broke up with Sam so..."
"So you're saying that with McKay with me in the Pegasus Galaxy and Jack retired to his lake, Sam is pregnant with... your child?"
"'Fraid so, Elizabeth."
"Well. Okay. It's not like I have an entire cityful of attractive men dying to take me to bed."
"It won't work, you know. I won't be jealous."
"Also, I had sex with Colonel Carter."
"Now I'm slightly jealous."
Anyhow, I adore Weir's arc so terribly much. The tensions between home and earth and... I have always held that they aren't trying to do much, but what they do with the earth-Atlantis arc? Is pretty good. I liked it. And Elizabeth correctly anticipated in "Home" what would happen when they finally did get back to Earth. Huh.
I was totally pleased with the Weir/Zelenka ending. This is in some ways exactly how I feel about that pairing -- like Zelenka can be the one who gives her exactly what she needs, whether it's a distraction or an idea or a backrub or pretty, pretty, PRETTY sex. In this case, it's a sense of purpose, a reminder of what it's all for. Weir/Zelenka/Atlantis. OT3.
I'm eagerly awaiting Rodney and Elizabeth having some UST again. I'm seeing the Sheppard/Weir tension much more this season, though I'm not feeling it by any means.
Oh. And, um, in case there was any doubt about Sheppard's feelings for Ford? OMGANGST. 'Tis shiny. So that's what's keeping him up nights.
And apparently he and Elizabeth are having late nightcoffee sex.
Finally -- thought the episode was structured/written, um, poorly. Was very unfond of the intercutting of almost unrelated flashbacks; it felt like they had two weak plots that they stuck together and made neither plot stronger in the process.
I ♥ the Asgaard like so frelling much (though I keep getting convinced that he is Sekritly Evil.)
Poor Ford!
And, oh, yes, the ending -- could it have been slashier?
McKay: Carson, I'm sunburned and need comfort. Do you have any, you know, lotion? Like, that could be used as lube?
Beckett: Of course, Rodney. Let's go.
McKay: NOW.
Beckett: Okay, I'm coming!
Stargate: SG-1: 9x03 "Origin"
..........................guhIamdeadofOTP.
In other thoughts! I really like both Vala and Cameron, especially Cameron, who's blindingly idealistic and pretty and has a grandma who was a hardcore Christian.
I'm guessing this is the thing that people were kerfluffling over re: religion/anti-religion? Well, personally, I thought it was, for the first time since S2, mythology that felt as broad and deep as the movie mythos. I felt like they really expanded the universe in a way that opened up possibilities rather than closing them off. And I think that was clearly and unequivocally stated in the final scene -- the existence of incredibly powerful beings has never negated the possibility of a God, and it doesn't now. You need to leave room for faith.
And Daniel doing his whole free will spiel? KILLED ME DED. This is Daniel Jackson whom I fell for, Daniel Jackson who's honest and passionate and articulate about the things he cares about most, including, especially, always, humanity. I love that about Daniel and always will. God, he's so good at this. I think "Threads" also reminded me to some extent what it was I loved about Daniel -- and it's that he keeps dying, and he keeps getting almost killed, and he's willing to be a martyr for what he believes in, and to fight and to die for it, and that's my Daniel. He's strong and he's smart and he's snarky but he cares. And he does not give up.
I'm excited about the mytharc again. This is OF THE GOOD.
The Jaffa rebellion has not interested me since, um, "Children of the Gods." I'm much more interested in Teal'c and his passionate concern for the Jaffa and simultaneous love for SG-1 and for the Tau'ri and the decision he must make about how to best live his life, which group he will ally himself with in order to to the most good. Ah, Teal'c. I <3 you so.
I was very glad I covered up the guest stars at the beginning, because I got slightly surprised by Jack showing up. Not, like, totally surprised, since when Daniel looked up, I thought, "oohhhh, Jack!" And sure 'nuff, there he was.
AND THEY ARE IN LOVE. They are SO IN LOVE.
I mean, okay. This is exactly what's so perfect about them. Because Jack shows up and... and they're always going to be coming back to each other. They'll never be able to stay away -- they love each other. They love the Stargate. They love. And Daniel says, "I wouldn't say this to anyone else." Because Jack is his only. And... and he loves him. So. Damned. Much.
"I'm scared."
And then that pregnant pause, with everything between them. That... *everything*.
"I'm hungry."
"Me too."
They are words unspoken. They are true love.
I enjoyed Cameron and Jack out for a joyride, too, and Teal'c's still counting how many times they saved the world, but dude. OTP! Got! A! Moment! *squee*
[oh yes, I entirely forgot to mention -- Vala in pigtails in the final briefing? SO CUTE! If I were John, I'd make Aeryn wear her hair in pigtails ALL THE TIME.]
Stargate: Atlantis 2x03 "Runner"
I have some severe quibbles with this season, most of them involving the ways that Elizabeth and Rodney aren't having sex onscreen, but that aside...
So! I finally was introduced to Ronan Dax! He was indeed quite Pretty and Stoical and whatnot. I think I'm going to like him.
Flashbacks of "First Commandment" with the sun that makes you crazy.
But Ford! FORD. I was almost convinced at the end that Sheppard was going to kill him -- and he would have, you know -- given the totality of build-up -- Skinner [oh, God, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! But I can't help it.] telling him that should the issue arise, he'd have to shoot Ford, and then the craziness, and... yeah. I love Ford. SO FRELLING MUCH. Even if McKay doesn't love him quite so much. That was interesting, the way they aren't all One Big Happy Team, but Teyla and Sheppard clearly caring more for Ford than McKay cared for him -- but McKay sill making those overtures of friendship, McKay still trying, bless his charred and bitter heart.
For me, the primary difference between McKay and Daniel -- and the differences are myriad! -- but the primary difference is that S1!Daniel is innocence in a way that I don't think McKay ever was. I feel like for McKay there's no... no joy of discovery? That going to new planets frightens him more than it invigorates him. And I feel like every moment for him is a struggle. In this episode... he knows what he's supposed to, but he's bungling, flailing his way through it. In a literal sense with getting caught in Ronan's trap, but also in his not knowing what he's supposed to do to attract Ford's attention, and the way he does handle Ford when he meets him. And realizing that they are heading to a showdown but getting continually further and further in over his head. "When did this escalate to physical violence?" "When did this become YOU KILLING ME WTF?" And he doesn't have Daniel's wry humor about these things, the, "Oh, okay. This is the part where you shoot me, huh?" McKay is much more... literal. And I love them both.
Anyhow! This is the Season of Lubricant, huh? With the coconut scented sunscreen that McKay makes himself? Yeah. Heh.
I really enjoy it when Teyla and Sheppard grope each other. "What are you doing?"
"Trying to get my hand free."
"That's not what it felt like." <3
"My sidearm, I swear."
Okay, and Sheppard/Ford is LOVE. With the angst and the questing and the hero-worship and I really like what this new development does to Ford's part of that relationship, because even though I love the OldSkoolSlashiness of S1, I also adore the Outgrowing the Worship arc, see also, Willow/Giles.
Er! "I might have to forgo reproduction." Reminds me that I have Ford/Weir/McKay babyfic I'm supposed to be writing. Don't ask me about this plotbunny, please.
... I'm still deeply bothered by the fact that Weir and McKay aren't having sex onscreen!
Stargate: SG-1 9x04 "The Ties That Bind"
It took me the entire episode to figure out that the guest star was the guy from Princess Bride. Nice one, casting director. NICE. *headdesks*
SO glad that Vala wasn't actually playing the Tragic Backstory Card [though apparently I forgot that her backstory really is canon....] Daniel's been around the block a few too many times for that to work on him. And Claudia Black is... can be... sexy, and cute, and emotional, and incredibly, incredibly funny, and all of them are equally captivating. I liked the hint of lesbianism but wish the SF they'd chosen had been prettier. *sigh* But Vala, like Chiana (who's pretty much the closest parallel I can think of), will have sex with anyone if it serves her best interests.
The temptation to have Daniel, Cameron, and Vala in one big OT3 of crossovery pr0nfulness is, okay, impossible to resist. Yessiree.
I do like how the presence of Vala and Cameron and Beau Ridges's character gives this season a very different feel but not necessarily a bad one. I appreciate that they pulled out the big guns for this one, and you don't get acting much better than BB and CB. And MS seems to be able to get to their level, at least when it's necessary -- and they aren't stealing scenes. CJ continues not to have very much to do, which is depressing. I mean, after 8 years, when it's down to Teal'c and Daniel, do they a) bring on talented and gorgeous new actors and let them steal the show or b) let Teal'c have more than three lines an episode. Yeah. I think you know which our beloved SG writers chose.
Vala really needs to break down Daniel's resistance on this sex thing -- the more nekkidness, the better. Since, clearly, since we aren't watching for the plot.
I wish Sam would come back and give Vala oddly jealous looks when she hit on Daniel. But clearly, Vala will attempt to sex Sam, and they can't get that past the censors. Also, you know, pregnancy. But I wish Sam would come back.
Cameron is WOOING DANIEL. OMGLOVE. And Jack gave them permission.
Teal'c says Cameron reminds him of Jack. Um, he doesn't remind me of Jack? But okay. "I'll take that as a compliment." "As you wish." Hee. Teal'c PWNZ Cameron's ass.
The first person to write Chiana/Vala fic WINZ! Quick poll:
[Poll #568337]
Ooh, 'nother poll. Current SG-team (Daniel, Teal'c, Vala, Cameron) faces off with PKW-era 'Scape team (Moya-Pilot, Rygel, Noranti, John, Aeryn, D'Argo, Chiana). How are they matched?
[Poll #568338]
Anyhow! This was a fun episode. I'm really enjoying the current season of SG-1. I know a lot of people stopped watching at some point and channeled all their energy into 'Lantis, but there seems to be a large contingent of Daniel/Vala fen and some Cameron-love. Am I wrong? *shrug*
Loved the meta nod to that -- they're throwing all the money at the Atlantis expedition. Yeah... because they think Weir is SEX, that's why. (Though I'm kind of sad that it's become pretty much easy to get from Earth to 'Lantis. Not trivial, but possible. My eternal and forever love of Farscape is that it took them THREE YEARS to get them home. And that lost-ness is way sexier to me than, um, a military colony. Which is what 'Lantis always was, but now that they've established easy transport, it's distinctly unsexy. I mean, minus the presence of Weir, which makes it sexy, but, you know.)
Stargate: Atlantis 9x04 "Duet"
Dude! Bad fandom! No cookie whatsoever. Do you realize I literally spent the entire episode fearing that Cadman-in-McKay would kiss Sheppard? Do you? Do you? Heck, I'm a McKay/Beckett shipper! I am! It's just I happen to like McKay/Weir more than, um, anything.
"Rodney has a date? With a woman?"
"It's just a casual meeting between -- yes with a woman!" <--- *sigh* There goes canonically!out!McKay. Sort of. Sadly, this episode feels like it needs to be retconned around.
And, um, look of disgust on Beckett's face, much? I mean, I get the "omgsqueecanonkissage!" impulse, and if it were my OTP doubtless I'd be delirious too, but seriously. Played with very little ambiguity.
In the meantime, I have my own canon!het to retcon around. On the plus side, though, my McKay-in-love seems to be entirely accurate. Stuttering, mumbling, incoherent, totally inadept at the art of the most basic conversation when faced with a woman he finds attractive. McKay is mannerless and thoughtless, and... *sigh* Just yes.
And Elizabeth went all dommey on his ass. ♥ "Rodney. I'm not asking you." GUH. And okay, did we all SEE the pretty moment of deference? The yelling at Cadman and then suddenly accidentally transferring anger to Elizabeth and then being all "Sorry. Oh, I'm sorry. What, please?" and in his head going, "I'm very, very sorry, ma'am. It will never happen again."
And Elizabeth's all, "Rodney, get thee to therapy. We'll talk about this... later."
"I'm sorr--"
"Rodney. That's an order."
"Yes, ma'am."
*dies* Everyone realizes this is my happy place, right?
Meanwhile, in
meyerlemon's happy place, Ronan and Teyla have UST. It made me very sad, the obvious transferal of emotion from Sheppard to Ronan. It was something like this:
Sheppard: I'm alpha.
Teyla: Me too. Sparring session?
Sheppard: With pleasure.
Ronan: *is even more alpha*
Teyla: Sparring session?
Sheppard: Hey! That was my sparring session.
Ronan: *shrug*
Teyla: What can I say, Colonel? Maybe if you worked out some.
Meanwhile, McKay doesn't exercise, isn't especially fit, hates to run, is still allergic to citrus, and the inside of his head, while not a pleasant place to visit, is apparently an adequate place to live.
I really, really enjoyed Cadman flirting with Beckett. Totally amusing. Clearly, David Hewlett was having a wonderful time.
Now I'm just going to contemplate the scene that will doubtless happen post-ep between Rodney and Elizabeth. I think we all know where my brain went.
Stargate: SG-1 9x05 "The Powers That Be"
... Vala is hot? I thought Rommie and the General had been sleeping together, not father-daughter. God, my brain lives in perv zone.
Will think more deeply about the religious/anti-religious thematic stuff when I get some more sleep.
Stargate: Atlantis 9x05: "Condemned"
Damn. This is my happy dark place, for serious. With the sending the Wraith after the bad guys and the absolute lack of remorse. Yes, they are hot. Letting the corrupt, slimy guy (and the random civilians!) get slaughtered, and the prisoners go free.
I like that they're keeping the existence of Atlantis a secret. Mmmm, hot secrecy.
So! Some flat-out statements of McKay's character -- cowardly and selfish on the outside, but a core of good character that means hurting his friends hurts him more than hurting him does. That's my McKay. But the cowardly on the surface -- that's important. And! That thing about how he pretends things are harder than they are in order to seem like a real hero at the end - that's the same thing Sheppard accused him of in "The Storm." How true is it? McKay says he does do that 'sometimes,' but I'd be more inclined to think it's a sub-concious defense mechanism. If he thinks of/describes tasks as daunting, then not only does his successful completion of them seem more heroic, but if he doesn't accomplish what he sets out to do (always a fear of his!) then he doesn't need to feel as guilty/stupid.
I'm not really enjoying how everyone calls each other by their first names. 'Tis supposed to be a special McWeir thing. :p
Weir = very hot when she's alpha. "Choose your words carefully."
"I do."
Ari: *dies*
Wordswordswords! CJ/Weir=OTP.
Was quite amused by Teyla breaking the stick over her knee and Sheppard trying the same thing and failing. Heee! Cute.
La! Weir is very prettysexyhot. I love her very much. And so does McKay. Really.
Stargate: SG-1 9x06 "Beachhead"
Other than yay! squee! "It's good to have you back, however temporarily" OTP Daniel/Sam 4evar, I was all, "They can't've killed Vala, the freaks," so thank goodness they didn't.
Earth is so royally frelled up the ass. Vala kicks. Sam's hair has serious problems.
Can they do a light, comedic, new!SG-1 ep now? With lots ofSam/Teal'c Sam/Cameron Cameron/Teal'c Sam/Daniel flirtage?
Like others, the joy of Vala was making me sad what Sam was coming back and Vala leaving (and thank you, fandom -- after seeing "Avalon", I stupidly thought I could read "Avalon" post-eps without being spoiled for "Beachhead," but I couldn't, because SG-fandom wouldn't know a spoiler warning if... okay, sorry. *bitterliekwhoa* I know that it's totally unreasonable that I expect fandom to cater to my insane need to watch things without knowing how they're going to end). Anyhow, I knew Vala was leaving after 6 eps, and was glad she got this send-off, though her bitching about how nobody loved her was kind of, um, unreasonable? Since though they snarked a lot, they definitely tolerated her. I felt like TPTB were totally forcing the Vala-must-leave agenda. And now CB needs to find another gig!I vote Aeryn miniseries.
Um! Right! I really need to write about the religion kerflufflage, but first I'd need to hunt down posts on that topic for my reference and also figure out what I, personally, think.
Next: Stargate: McWeir 2x06
Stargate: Atlantis 2x06 "Trinity"
Can someone explain to me why this is called "Trinity"?
Minor issues aside, though, damn. This went to an intense place, like whoa. Tell me again, fandom. Tell me Rodney isn't arrogant. Tell me. Okay. I love McKay, I do, and he... and the thing is, he wouldn't be as good as he is if he didn't go this place, if he didn't have utmost confidence in his abilities. And... and okay, let's see. Recap:
Seeing McKay and Zelenka happy and squeeful over this was deeply adorable, and seeing Sheppard geeking over the weaponry must've been exciting too, and eee! Seeing them all happy was just adorable. Love. Love them. Really, really, really love them.
Can see where the McSheppers are coming from. The intensity of the McKay/Sheppard scenes in this episode was incredible. I mean, DH went to a place. And JF was totally coming with him. And it was pretty amazing, the trust issues, the way... McKay needs people to trust him and rely on him and have confidence in his abilities, needs it at a deep place that transcends the surface arrogance. He does have an emotional need for people to be able to trust him. And...
With Zelenka, Zelenka knows he's smart, and they get to the snarky, competitive place that both of them need to excel, challenging each other and correcting each other.
And Weir... oh, but I'll get to Weir in a second.
But with Sheppard, on a daily basis, off-world, they rely on each other, and I think McKay really counts on that more than he might've realized until this happened, when he basically cashes it in and... and lets Sheppard down. Gah. Just, gah.
Okay, so Zelenka really got shafted. And the gloating he'll be able to do will not make up for it.
The thing is... okay. Until Zelenka's message, McKay was right. Taking a risk, yes. But he'd made the calculations, and he thought it could work, and he wanted to make it work for... for personal reasons. To redeem his colleague's death, and to prove that he was right. Which is fair 'nuff. But once Zelenka brought up the arguments? I think McKay was totally in over his head and made a mistake. And I like that they went there. That it wasn't just that he was scientifically in error, but that he made an error of judgement. A moral error, even. I am loving that my show is going that deep.
Ohh, B-plot:
-Teyla is a skilled negotiator. Ronan, not so much. It was adorable to see Ronan so excited and sharing manly embraces with the other guy. Yay boyhugging! And the UST between them... happened quickly, but is believable. I just wish it didn't seem so clearly like they're breaking up the Shep/Teyla in order to have Sheppard/Weir happen. *sigh* But whatever. They, too, got to go to the intense place of Staring Angstily At Each Other. I think Teyla was wrong, though, when she said she understood why Ronan killed the Bastard Former Commander, but that the others wouldn't -- Weir would totally be against the Revenge Thing, but I think Sheppard would understand Ronan's motivations as much as Teyla did.
They're adorable together because they're woobies in exile. And damn, I might just need to icon that. I love the exile thing, as you know. The away-from-home-and-can't-go-back thing. Eee!
All right, Weir.
This bugged me. I know that spending a summer away from them and letting the Weir + McKay in my head interfere with my recollections of canon probably set my expectations too high, but... I love Weir going all alpha on him. I just wish it would work. And the thing... "I know Rodney McKay. Sometimes I have to say no to him for his own good," or something like that? I mean, yes, that's very much a part of their dynamic for me... Weir knows him better than he knows himself... but I felt like I was missing part of the respect she has for him. Yes. That is what has been bugging me about this season. I haven't seen Weir's respect for McKay as much as I did last season. Understanding is part of it, but that understanding comes with a deep respect for him as a scientist and a person. This season I'm feeling like it's not so much coming from a place of love. And that makes me sad.
And it's sad that Rodney's belief that Elizabeth is more likely to listen to John seems to be true. =( Although it might be that Weir... trusts McKay less than Sheppard? Because she understands him more? I mean, with a man like McKay who is over-confident and is occasionally in error but never in doubt, it must be hard to know when to listen to him and when not too. And I think having Zelenka as the back-up scientist type means you have to listen to him, i.e., Zelenka, sometimes. But yeah, it's hard. And clearly, Sheppard's trust in McKay and Weir's trust in Sheppard... eh. Three quarters of a solar system, all I'm saying.
So yeah. Rodney, not so admirable in this ep, but God was this the good kind of intense.
All I could make out of the final conversation:
Elizabeth: Rodney, can you [...] not speak for one second? [...] Everybody on this base [...] You are the smartest man we have [eeee! 'k, am pathetic]
Rodney: I know.
Elizabeth: [You put] your life, and other people's lives, at risk. You destroyed three quarters of a solar system.
Rodney: Five sixths; it's not an exact science.
Elizabeth: Rodney, can you give your ego a rest for one second?
Stargate: SG-1 9x07 "Ex Deus Machina"
Well! Many Ba'als = more hot than 1 Ba'al. "You've only just begun." = O_O Ba'al is the First Slayer. Was sad what 1!Ba'al died, but there are clone!Ba'als to have Ba'al!orgies. Yay?
Plotwise, adored Cameron slapping the SG badges on their uniforms, and not daring to try that with Teal'c. He miraculously established instant chemistry with the entire team. Amazing! Ben Browder's just good like that. But anyhow... um...
Daniel and Sam got to be hot, as they always do during Trust!eps, but they sadly got far too little time to be hot together.
Which is in addition to, um, how shall I put this... the Moment of Boom. On the one hand? It's fun that it's so easy to retcon. ("I'm not exactly single. See, you know Daniel and Teal'c and Colonel O'Neill? We have this, um... let's just say I'm not exactly single." Or, "I'm actually single, but I've joined a convent? And we consider ourselves Brides of Christ. It's a thing. So, I still can't have UST with you." Or, "Not exactly -- did you see how hot Daniel looks in civvies?" Or, "Cassie's been going through a hard time. I'm helping her out via sex." Or, "I'm not so much single as spending all my free weekends using my private, back-engineered-by-Orlin Stargate and the ZPM he fashioned out of dental floss to travel to the Pegasus Galaxy to sex [pick as many as you desire: {Rodney, Elizabeth, John, Teyla, Ronan, Ford, Zelenka}]." Still, it caused me a moment of Squick.
I am enjoying Sam less this season than I did last season. It makes me sad that my girls are not being as enjoyable as they should be.Perhaps they should spank each other to release some of their inner sexitude.
Okay, I'm out. No more deep* thoughts. Oh, but, um, moment of Sam/Cassie? = happy!Ari. ["I needed a job with more flexible hours because Janet's adopted daughter is going through a hard time"]
*Deep? Clearly, I have low standards for myself
Stargate: Atlantis 2x07 "Instinct"
..... plot. Father-daughter stuff. *kills me ded* Bad SG! I mean, I do not care. If it is father-daughter stuff, and if it's loyalty, and sacrificial, and love for daughter above all else, and the daughter not wanting to disappoint the father, then I am *dead*. so, clearly, this episode was... um... this episode killed me dead? That should pretty much sum it up, I think. With the father, and the daughter, and the sadness, and the sacrifice, and the unhappy ending, and the lying to protect him, and "the serum doesn't work. It never did." GAH. *dies* And she fed on him. *dies again* "Deep Down," anyone? (what, no, I'm not single-minded and disturbed.)
Okay, so the plot killed me dead. What else? Um, Teyla is slowly growing on me. Ronan is a lot like Teal'c, isn't he? I mean, in superficial ways? It's like the SGwriters were like, "Teyla's okay, but we need a better Stoic Alien. Why don't we make him a refugee, too? And a skilled warrior, and with a sly wit?" And thus they made Ronan. But I am enjoying him. Eh. Am still squicked from the Moment of Ship in SG-1, and I should get to bed, and fankly, I was in this one for the plot, and it made me very sad, and I loved them very much, and they are DEAD. *cries* And so am I.
And that's all! 14 episodes of Stargate! I heart my shows.
And thanks to
Also, the usual suspects (in this case,
+++
And apparently he and Elizabeth are having late night
Meanwhile, in
Sheppard: I'm alpha.
With lots of
Like others, the joy of Vala was making me sad what Sam was coming back and Vala leaving (and thank you, fandom -- after seeing "Avalon", I stupidly thought I could read "Avalon" post-eps without being spoiled for "Beachhead," but I couldn't, because SG-fandom wouldn't know a spoiler warning if... okay, sorry. And now CB needs to find another gig!
Um!
It makes me sad that my girls are not being as enjoyable as they should be.

Oh, and I thought I'd recommend a fic set immediately post Trinity. No spoilers, as the person wrote it basically the night after the ep. It shows Elizabeth's respect for McKay, and weaves it in with the canonical scene at the end. http://www.livejournal.com/users/doylefan22/1349.html#cutid1

I've also noticed that the McKay/Weir relationship has changed a lot this season, mostly by... absence. I'm not entirely sure what happened there or how to explain it within the context of the series. Maybe with the Daedalus around and more staff she's just got too much stuff to juggle to have time for him now that he's closer to his team? I... really don't get it!
I liked what you said about the weirdness that McKay knows that Sheppard can get through to Elizabeth when he can't. Without my OTP hat on, I can really notice the freaky battle-bond that Sheppard and Weir have formed over the Siege arc and how it's not really a good thing, necessarily. I suspect they feel threatened by the new authorities at play (Caldwell and Earth) and so seem to be trying to keep a united front even when it's not necessarily the best idea. I mean, I'm not sure as an audience member that Sheppard really is ready (qualified, capable, experienced enough yet, etc) to actually be the best choice for military commander, which casts the professional alliance of Sheppard and Weir this season in an interesting light for me.
And I love Skinner forever. SKINNNERRRRRR! It's like he was born to play authority figures with questionable allegiances.

I've also noticed that the McKay/Weir relationship has changed a lot this season, mostly by... absence. I'm not entirely sure what happened there or how to explain it within the context of the series.
Phew! Am not going insane! (Thought OTP bias might've made me unable to perceive what was actually onscreen in front of me; it wouldn't be the first time.)
Hmmmmm. Thought! This all might relate to my disillusionment/upsetness at the ease of them getting back to Earth/transmitting data to Earth. Because I very much like the isolation of S1 in part because of the angst it inspires but also because without Earth's intervention/control/influence, it very much is Weir and Sheppard and McKay as three leaders and obviously a chain of command but they all have essentially the same goals? Or the struggles that exist are internal among the three of them and it's very much about surviving in Atlantis and not so much about the politics, which is my preferred kind of struggle/dynamic/arc to have going on?
So with the addition of
SkinnerCaldwell, and by extension the President, not to mention the SGC itself to the active dynmic of the show (instead of a distant and possibly unreachable past)... well, it changes things. Also! It's interesting how in "Trinity," at least, Caldwell is taking McKay's side (though his interest is all Guns Good, Enemies Bad, while McKay's is more personal and scientific), and Weir is very much doubtful about that, and then you've got Sheppard in the middle with his loyalty to Weir and (as you mentioned) the united front they want to present, and on the other hand his own Guns Good, Enemies Bad mentality. Can't help thinking how different this is from SG-1 where Daniel is in no way whatsoever pro-big-guns and is all about the Words, Words, Words.
Yay, thoughts!

Date: 2005-09-11 08:29 pm (UTC)I had thought that as well, so much so that when he said something about her mother, thought he was just trying to get on her good side. Took a minute to click what was going on. Heh
With the father, and the daughter, and the sadness, and the sacrifice, and the unhappy ending, and the lying to protect him, and "the serum doesn't work. It never did.
Oh, this was such a good ep. Though really really weird hearing Kaylee's voice out of a Wraith face.
Was impressed with Beckett as well, in that he stepped up and did what he had to to help McKay. With him being a doctor and not military, wasn't sure how capable he'd be in that situation. Needn't have worried.

Date: 2005-09-12 01:48 pm (UTC)Yeah, it was right about that point that I thought maybe they were related in some other way. That, "Call her yourself!" thing made me go, "ohhh."
It feels like they played it as a deliberate mislead, which makes no sense whatsoever, since we care approx. 0 about either character at this point and the only thing it could possibly generate is sex!fic written pre-reveal and...okay, now I'm kind of wondering if there is any. Because that would be wrong. hee. *bad person*
I didn't realize that that was Jewell Staite's guest spot. Comes of covering up the opening credits so as not to get spoiled-ed. *is all informed-like now*

Date: 2005-09-13 01:44 am (UTC)And no, it's fine to mention it -- I cover up the guest stars' names at the beginning of eps so I won't be spoiled for surprise endings (for instance, in this batch, Jack's semi-surprising appearance at the end of "Origin",) but once I've seen the episode, it's fine to point out guest starrage. :)
(And I knew that she had a guest spot; I just didn't know when it was or who she'd be playing.

Was worried I'd inadvertanly spoiled future eps because now you knew which one she'd been in.
so I won't be spoiled for surprise endings (for instance, in this batch, Jack's semi-surprising appearance at the end of "Origin",)
Ah, yeah understand that.
When I was first watching my S1 DVD's and a friend in Cali was watching them 'with me' and we were IMing each other, he told me not to watch during the credits for Thor's Hammer and he'd tell me when I could look again. He wanted to see if I recognized who was doing the voice for the Unas.
Well, he hadn't remembered how long into the show it was before they put the name up, and thought he must of just missed it, so told me to go ahead and watch.
As soon as I started watching, of course, saw the name. :/
Would have been kinda cool to have that be a suprise.

Date: 2005-09-11 11:21 pm (UTC)I don't know, but Paul McGillion must have had a ball. He was at Dragon Con last weekend and he was joking about the kiss, going on and on about David stalking him now. He even had copies of a pic of David and him kissing to autograph at his table. He's a jokester, that's for sure. I asked him for his autograph (just of him, not the kiss pic) and he asked my name and he put 'to Sexy Sandy'. I asked him how he knew that was my hated nickname when I was in junior high. *shakes head* He was cute...as was Alexis Cruz. And Gary Jones? He was hilarious! He could be a stand up comic. And Carmen Argenziano was just so nice. He and Alexis showed up at our Stargate party. They spent about an hour just sitting and talking with us.

Date: 2005-09-12 06:13 am (UTC)And that pretty much sums up my feelings for the first seven eps of Atlantis so far. Plenty of Elizabeth with Shep, minimal Elizabeth with Rodney. My ship leanings are obvious, so I'm slowly moving from confused to annoyed to just plain cheesed-off. Don't get me wrong, if I could ship Shep/Weir I would and I'd be okay with things. But of all the ship combos on Atlantis, even "competing" ones like Weir/Caldwell, Weir/Zelenka, Weir/Carson, even Weir/Simon, Shep/Weir is the one I dislike the most. And when TPTB pushes aside scenes with Elizabeth and Rodney and disregards any trust they had before (see your discussion on Trinity) to make room for more scenes with her and Shep, well that upsets me even more. Gah!
But...we still have 13 eps left. I'll cling to some hope that we get a bone or something to play with (insert pervy comment about Rodney, Elizabeth, and bone here). Otherwise I'm going to have to immerse myself in fanfic. :)
