BUT, I'm experiencing massive confusion regarding your poll. Are you asking whether my view of McKay (OMG, teh sex0rs!) is completely different than other fans (geeky-geek-geek)? Or are you implying that most of the fandom dislikes McKay and I'm 180 simply because I like him?
And these ticky boxes thingies, gah? Too early, need a donut.
The question refers to the constant and never-ending kerfluffles regarding McKay's characterization -- is he a coward? A hero? Whiny? Brave? Butch? My McKay is a total and complete bottom. He's also bi and attracted to Weir. It seems to me that my total-and-completely subby!McKay is, um, totally contrary to what most of fandom thinks. And I thought many people felt kind of the same way. It's this thing.
I have to qualify my answer, I don't think you McKay is that different from GOOD characterizations of McKay. It is very different from the bad ones, because well it's not bad. :-)
I also think a lot of the McKay's differ because some people (like me) concentrate just on the snark, where others (you, kate98) go a little deeper in to the stuff behind the snark.
So I don't think your characterization is that different on the base, I think the application of the characterization is what differs. (if this makes ANY sense?)
Ack! I think there's pronoun confusion. I was asking whether I thought you, control_freak thought your, control_freak's, characterization was different from the rest of fandom. I know my McKay is different. :p
Actually, it's more like I'm an idiot and I can't read. :-) I just re read your poll and I misunderstood. Whoops!
I don't think my characterization is that different from those that are snarky, but I think if I went deeper into McKay mine would be different. (at least I hope).
I identify the McKay in the show more with how you, or Kate write him then with the hero!McKay or sexgod!McKay I've seen other places.
"the rest of fandom" is a bit broad. I don't ship Sheppard/McKay, but I read it, and if you can remove the pairing I like/share the viewpoing of a lot of their McKays.
Now the parts of fandom that have him a crying, sniveling, weakwilled ninny...yes, that I feel I'm the polar opposite of.
Hmm, now see, I don't ship Sheppard/McKay and can't read it -- which I think has more to do with my Sheppard issues than my McKay characterization, but I'm not sure.
And I know "the rest of fandom" is broad, but I sometimes get the impression that that's how people feel -- it's them and their friends against EVERYONE ELSE.
180 might be a little far. But it's skewed. Same for John and Liz, actually. Probably Ronon too, when I get to writing him. Teyla's kind of a blank still.
Most of the fandom that I interact with is convinced that McKay is wonderful, and squee about him regularly. But as far as his romantic life goes, I find that I'm in the minority for thinking that he's A) straight/bisexual but leaning towards the straight side, and B) has been in love with Dr. Weir since the first episode. Really, she's the first person we ever see him so deferential towards.
Of course, the only person I actually dragged into the fandom reached the same conclusion before I started explaining my reasons for liking McKay with Elizabeth, and I've actually got her writing fic as well, so I don't feel as alone.

Oddly, I think most of fandom love McKay. They just all love different McKays.

*joins you in the happy minority* Actually, mostly thanks to discussions with sage_theory, my McKay is sort of vocally bisexual, but at the same time, entirely and only interested in Weir. For lo, I am a ridiculous and pathetic shipper and cry regularly over the slashiness of this fandom, even though I'm a slasher in SG-1.
Welcome to the flist, btw -- I see that besides your wise and astute McKay/Weir shippiness, you're a friend of Elizabeth's, who's also wise and astute. :) *greets*
