random fic!kinks, characters, and linkage
Aug. 18th, 2005 02:30 pmI have a thing for characters sitting around and talking about their love lives. Like, the non!Fred/Giles fic I tried to write last night was the Core Four sitting around and talking about the State of the Scoobies, and it was all, "Oh, sometimes Anya does x" and "Last night Riley and I did y." I love that. I don't know why. It works cross-fandom, too -- I love Jack/Daniel fic where Daniel talks to Sam about it and she's a bit unnerved by it and... oh, and Weir and Beckett talking about Beckett's wacky and weird relationship with Ford, wrote that one too. Wash and Kaylee talking before Wash marries Zoe. The fic Meg wrote me where Ford's all, "McKay, you're totally crushing on Dr. Weir."
I don't know why! I think this relates the the party!games!kink, where I don't care how silly and fluffy and ooc it is, if they're playing Truth or Dare, I'm there.
You know, sometimes this discussion of romantic prospects can lead to the discussers making with the big shiny love themselves (as in
sangerin's recent The Romantic Prospects of Winifred Burkle), but sometimes it's just friends talking about their love life. Why should this be? I know not. But it is one of those things that happies me. Maybe because we as a fandom spend all our time talking about the intricacies and parallels among all the relationships, so I like it when some of that meta happens in the character's heads too.
And also it's the off-center cropping thing, where the obvious crop would be to have the Romance right in the center of the story and making the story about discussing the romance, or about, like, a friendship affected by it, is just that nice left-of-center eye-catching crop. Yes.
Okay, okay. Character thoughts meme: [I seem to have gotten myself into a squee!love!everyone mood last night by watching "The Gift," not to mention my usual desire to love everyone and offend no one, so take with a grain of salt, perhaps?]
The King of All Cosmos from Katamari Damacy:
Becky thought I would NEVER HAVE HEARD OF THIS. The very idea. I have spent many, many a mindless hour watching
cheese_munkey and her roommate play this game. Uh, all I know about the character is that he, um, er, actually, not entirely much at all. The game is oddly soothing in a totally crackful way.
The Ninth Doctor
Er, that would be the Doctor from the series what just finished its first season? What I know are: he is a Doctor, which is an alien of somekind, and he is totally asexual, except that he's possibly straight, or maybe gay, and other doctors have had babies, so he's probably not, and also has shippiness with Rose, but there are more shippiness with Tardis, wot is the name of the ship.
Connor from AtS
I ♥ baby!Connor, first of all, and how he affects Angel. *fandom backs away slowly* What! I do! I love Angel growing up and becoming a father. Anyhow, Connor is one of those characters who annoys me a lot onscreen because even though all his actions make sense, I still feel like slapping him because he's being irrational. Which is not his fault 'cos Holtz r frelled him over royally, and Angel being a fuckwit and lying to him doesn't help.
Anyhow, Connor also isn't one of those characters who's grown on me that much through fandom, though I have read some fic that's made me go, "Huh. I don't so much hate Connor in that." (Specifically, These Reasonable Taboos by
glossing and The Uninvited Guest by
yahtzee63.) I mean, I don't so much want to harsh anyone's mellow who loves him, but I'm not so much about the Connor!love myself.
Do ♥ him in "Origin," though. Aww. *patpat*
The First from BtVS
Tons of potential. Not so much follow-through. Loved it in the end of "Lessons," with the reprise of villains. Oh yes. Did not love so much when actions ceased to make sense. Have S7 issues, we does.
Tyr from Andromeda (and possibly his son, if you've picked up anything from osmosis).
Tyr=love. KHC is a fabulous actor, and I just adore watching Tyr. He is also TEHPRETTYOMG. And when he cries at the end of "Angel Dark, Demon Bright"? So much love, man. Mostly I love to watch him a lot and he's entertaining and wonderful, but I don't really groove on Neits as much as, say, my girlfriend does. (She says they are "the most potentialful thing done recently in sci-fi," but I don't see it all that much.) That said? Tyr=rocks.
His son? Um.... well, I saw "Immaculate Perception," and, um, can we say crack? Can we say Mary Sue? Can we say "genetic reincarnation of the founder of the race whaaat?" There is not so much love.
Freaky!Trance (as opposed to purple!Trance).
Trounce is teh_suck. Trance is bubbly and purple and fakes innocent like no one's business. She's mysterious and beautiful and bubbly and cute and this is the appeal of her character. If you don't SEE that she has a sekrit!agenda (to put it mildly), then you are BLIND.
Me = hating on the gold!Trance.
Lorne! from AtS
I ♥ Lorne. He's funny and sweet, but what I love most about him is his stalwart refusual to become a hero. He lives with heroes, man. He walks with heroes and he remains himself. He's lovely and queer and green and he sings and he's... okay, he's Lorne, man. And I adore him.
Jayne (requested twice)
Okay, he's wonderful to watch, because he is SO FRELLING FUNNY. Because stupid, selfish, and greedy are comedy gold, and Joss and Adam Baldwin know this.
Jayne has moments of being more than that -- the end of Ariel. The hat. I love those things about him. I'm not a Jayne!girl -- my heart belongs to Kaylee x100000; everyone else pales in comparison to the shiny -- and I don't have any deep emotional investment in him, but he is fun to watch.
Mal
Big Damn Hero, baby. Big Damn Hero. I love Mal 'cos Mal loves Serenity. When Mal's mean to Kaylee, my heart breaks, because everyone should always be nice to Kaylee. ALWAYS. And then I want to slap him. But most of the time I adore him, and want to just crawl into his head and live there with the pain and the dry wit and and the dry, dry angst. It's wonderful. Reluctant heroes, mmm.
Gunn
I prefer Gunn when he's in the middle of the Wes-Fred-Gunn triangle of doom era. *fandom has now backed entirely out of the room* Well, I'm lying about that. I love Gunn best in S1, 2 -- okay, love him bestbest in "To Shanshu in LA." Cos DUDE. <3 He is wry and funny and real and there is angst and pretty and Fred/Gunn is love and Cordy/Gunn is LOVE and the struggle between fitting in with new crowd and remembering old friends -- man. Is love.
Andrew (Buffy)
Um, let's just put it like this. When I was reading Cady's Dawn/Faith ficlet, and there was a moment of Andrew --> Xanderness? I totally went ::heartmelt:: I love Andrew THAT MUCH. You know my love of Braca, because he loves Scorpius far more than Scorpius loves him? Multiply that by like 100, and you get how much I love Andrew's angsty unrequited love for Warren and then Xander. No, 'tis like, SO PRETTY. And makes me die of love.
Because no, Andrew is not perfect, and yes, he killed Jonathan, and that can't be forgiven, but Andrew KNOWS that. And... and he's a fanboy. A storyteller. A dork. He avoids reality. He plays pretend.
He is my Mary Sue and I LOVE HIM TO BITS.
Jonathan (Buffy)
I love Jonathan and pity him, mostly adore the continuity of him going from "extra in t-shirt" to front credits, yo. Yay continuity. And he tries so hard, never makes it, but believes in what's right. And just doesn't get it, not ever, that you don't become a hero by making one dramatic gesture but by living right. But he... he works for me. I just *love everyone* today.
Gil Grissom from CSI
Isn't he a FFKOAH contender? Old and hot and pretty and slashable? Or am I confusing him with someone else?
Yeah, based on a quick interest seach, I'm going with hot-as-fuck.
Stacey McGill, BSC :)
I wish I liked Stacey more than I did, but she just *annoys* me. The "luv" and the stupid hearts over the I's and... okay, admittedly, Boy-Crazy Stacey is not the best book for awesome!Stacey, but still. (It's totally rich how she thinks she's more mature than Mary Anne when Mary Anne is taking care of the Pikes and she's lusting after a 17-year-old lifeguard. Yeah, Stace, real mature.) I like her best filtered through other people -- I *adore* how much Claud loves her, and Charlotte -- but then, we know this. ;) She *could* be interesting, but very often in canon isn't.
Harvey? (The Farscape one, not any other Harveys there may be floating around out there. :))
When I first got into 'Scape, I thought Harvey didn't really exist, that he was just John's projection of what Scorpius would be like. In reality he's so much cooler than that. I love John best when he's frelled beyond measure, and Harvey is the best device ever for driving a character around the bend. We know I love psychological!hurt, and getting under character's skin, and Harvey is that literally.
Plus, he lets us see the hilarious and wonderfully entertaining and horribly frelled inside-of-John's-brain.
Anyone from the Tomorrow People
Megabyte! Adam! Lisa! Um, the Tomorrow People have special powers, and they can teleport, and they are everywhere, children all around us. They are very cool and differ from the X-Men in important ways that are escaping me at the moment.
Tessa from SG-1 is one and I love her BEYOND ALL REASON.
River on Firefly
River is my second favorite Firefly character. My love for her crept like a creeping thing, but now I adore her immeasurably. She's just so crazy and so smart. Everything about her clicks. She's gorgeous and eerie, creepy and innocenct, a wise killer good child beloved sister. I love her with Simon, love her with Kaylee, love her with Dawn, love her with Fred, love her everywhere, everytime, everything about her, OMG. *explodes with love* "Objects in Space" is just ecstatic. River clicks.
due South: Benton Fraser
Instant. Character. Love. No seriously. I squealed through the first episode and just fell in love. I'm lacking even the words to describe how much I love the he's a boy scout, and not to prove a point, not to make a statement but just because that's who he is. And he grew up in a library. And he's so funny, and so sweet, and so. much. love. *explodes even more*
Ray Kowalski
He is geeky. He is not RayV. He is probably having sex with Fraser. Or possibly Vecchio. Something about Stella. Also maybe a dog?
Duncan MacLeod
Duncan is very pretty. He's an Immortal; only one Immortal should be able to live at a time, but Methos is also around (this might be a Bad Thing.) Duncan is obviously having sex with Methos. Have I mentioned he's really, really pretty?
Methos
Methos is played byTanith Peter Wingfield. He's apparently very pretty, despite the evil caused by snake-in-head. He's an Immortal, a chameleon, amoral, has lots and lots of sexual experience, and is having sex with Duncan.
Lt Commander Worf (DS9)
I think this is the same Worf who was on TNG, but I could be wrong. In any event, they are Klingons. There's some continuity error re: tentacles. [eta: okay, fine! there are no tentacles! /eta] Klingons are very cool. Somehow Worf differs from D'Argo in very significant ways, which escape me at the moment.
Fred/Giles fic still not written, but they are having sex -- Elizabeth wrote me comment!pr0n

Am being good and not commenting on the stuff i disagree with you on. *uses the River icon because we both love River like whoa* [And wow, i love your description.]
I find Connor really interesting am trying to think of fic you would like. I wonder if you would like Masq's The Destroyer series. *adds fics you listed to list of reading material*

No idea what that acronym is, but yeah. He was my first CSI love, and when i first started watching first season i assumed he and Catherine were gonna be paired. Sporadically watching later seasons, i love his dynamic with Sara. The Quentin Tarantino finale of last season? omg the Gil/Nick. And the problematic fat people episode from i dunno what season so plays up the gay!Grissom reading. He is an emotionally distant older guy who is brilliant and has quirky interests and is sometimes scruffy and yeah, hot-as-fuck.
I *adore* how much Claud loves her, and Charlotte -- but then, we know this. ;)
*grins* Oh the woe of "She *could* be interesting, but very often in canon isn't." *cough*Hermione*cough*

Yay, linkage! I don't know why I went so link-happy with this post, but it's probably your fault. That's usually a safe bet. :p (Though there was some meta about the First that I wanted to reference but couldn't find. *misses bookmarks*)

YES. Love Andrew. Love "Storyteller". And omg you're going to hate me for saying this, but this is why I have major issues with Season 7 Willow. Post-England, anyway. It seems she was getting it in the England scenes with Giles, but then she comes back and... Not so much with the getting it.

Same Worf. There are no tentacles! What tentacles?? They have bumpy foreheads though. That's where the cliche comes from. When Joss says there won't be any bumpy foreheads on Firefly. No idea what D'Argo is like so can't compare.
