vmars episodes 3-8
Apr. 19th, 2005 08:21 pmSpoilers through ep eight ("Like A Virgin"). Since am watching House rather than VM, this will stand for awhile:
[episode 3: "Meet John Smith"]
GAH. Loved Justin's father. This show has a special place in my heart because of B-plots I can actually get behind. And the parent-child relationships. They kills me dead, they does. Although Veronica's mother is not as cool to me as Veronica's father. Whom I just love. And the guidance counselor plus Veronica's father? OMG yay!
And is it permitted to be a Troy/Veronica shipper? Because they are. So. Cute.
I liked Duncan, too, although I'm a little concerned about the implication that going off anti-depressants was the wrong choice, or at least, the choosing to live as if nothing was wrong choice. It's an implication I could live without... I don't know. I'll have to consider that particular subplot and get back to you on it. Duncan won my love by belting out songs from Grease, though.
Wallace: love madly, but suspect that his continual Xander-ish role as errand boy will not last forever before whiplash hits. I look forward to that.
Did I mention how totally awesome Justin's father was? And how much of a bitch his mother is? I'm totally compelled to write fic about the father and her parole officer husband/boyfriend... could be such an awesome story. Although, possibly, I'm not the person to write that story. And possibly it wouldn't need to be fanfic.
I'm going to take a nap before gorging on more.
[episode 4: "The Wrath of Con"]
Ehhh, not so much loving the weekly plot. Anything that takes potshots at nerds is not of the cool in my book. Because nerds, yes, funny, but beating on the nerds, not so funny. Not if you don't love them. And that's the thing. This show, for all it's good bits, and damn, there are good bits, is not nerd-friendly. These are not my people. And so, um, yeah. It comes down to that relating to people who are not like me thing. Which is not so easy when there aren't the obvious evident similarities.
This is going to be an issue I have with the series as a whole, because on a surface level, I reeeally don't relate to the main characters, especially in the pre-death timeline. Their Homecoming party with the champagne and the limo? Kinda squicked me, actually. It's not my kind of thing, and it's so far from my kind of thing that I have difficulty comprehending how anyone could find that fun.
But Lily reminds me a little bit of Marilyn Monroe, a sort of falling star, wild and untamed and ... I don't know. I really don't like Lily, and I don't particularly get why Veronica did, but she did, and maybe that's enough.
Enter Logan the misunderstood woobie. I do sympathize with him... and I do like that all three of them, Duncan and Logan and Veronica, are experiencing the maturity that comes with their grief, and especially since Lily was the center of their lives, and she just fell out of the center and now there's a hole in their world. *cough*
I have mixed feelings about the way Veronica is portrayed as smart but not bookish or conventionally intellectual at all... on the one hand, anything that goes against the grain is a-okay, but on the other hand, geeksquee. And my girl Veronica outsmarting the mean, nasty nerds who use their intelligence for evil... *argh* Sorry. This episode caused me a wee bit of squick.
otoh: Wallace got some. Weevil cried. I love Veronica's father so ridiculously much.
And Veronica went skinny-dipping. Which is just gah.
[episode 5: "You Think You Know Somebody"]
So evidently it's not permitted to be a Troy/Veronica 'shipper. Which makes me sad. Because it felt... ugh, it felt trite. Because obviously a relationship established in the second episode can't be a good one.
But I also kind of feel like Veronica didn't learn anything substantial. Which could be okay... she basically figured out that you trust no one and knowledge is a weapon, which she already knew, and reconfirmed that she needs to be a loner. Although... I did like about Troy that he wasn't an outcast the way she was so she was sort of forced out of that self-defined role... because he was friends with Logan, which kind of made Veronica once again on the fringes of the society she (sort of) wants to be part of.
The way Veronica and her dad exchanged the information? And the way Veronica's had a hidden meaning and her father understood that meaning and broke up with his girlfriend, and how he's such a good father and loves her so much and is trying, so hard, to do the right thing? That I love. (Have I mentioned that Keith Mars is probably my favorite character? I haven't? Because he so is.)
Possibly because I was sort of distracted during this episode by something else, I don't really remember the details too well... but the plot kinda confused me.
[episode 7: "The Girl Next Door"]
Among other things, better than the Sentinel "Girl Next Door." Quite possibly containing my favorite moment yet, with the suggestion that Keith Mars isn't Veronica's biological father. Of course I suppose the point is that her biological father would be Mr. Kane, which would make Duncan/Veronica incestuous (and oh, isn't it good that they never slept together?) and Lily and Veronica sisters (which is what the secret Lily had to tell Veronica would be, isn't it? A secret, and a good one?) Yay SPEC. OMFG.
But yeah. Considering my explosion of love for Keith & Veronica, this kind of thing is totally exciting. Because... GAH. OMFG GAH. In an almost totally noncestuous way. Almost. (I admit, I'm a horrible person, so at Keith's suggestion that Veronica rub his feet, I had a moment. But it was over quick.)
Aaaand you'll all be excited to hear that this is the episode that made me think hey, maybe Logan isn't all asshole, after all. "Like" might be a strong word for how I feel about him, but dude, I totally see where there might be... where he might be figuring stuff out, right? Although is it wrong of me to mostly have felt bad for Mr. Daniels in that whole deal? And to think that neither Weevil nor Logan was cool at all? Eh. My brain is doing head-spinning because Weevil especially does have traits I admire, but I would probably not like him at all if he were a real person because I wouldn't get to see things like the end of "Credit Where Credit's Due."
Logan, on the other hand. Is an asshole. Do we get to see how he's really dealing with Lily's death? Or... I dunno. On the one hand, one of the things that's resonating with me is how they -- all of them -- deal with the aftermath of the death of their friend/sister/girlfriend, because, hello, losing someone who was too young to die when I was too young to grieve, defining experience in my life. Especially since part of it, I think, is Veronica's realization that Lily was... was who she was, and trying to keep that memory of her alive, vivacious and lively and not by any means a saint. But Logan? Ehhh, I'm not seeing it. But I can see where the interestingness could come in and that he's not entirely flat.
Duncan, on the other hand, really interesting me. Especially since the end of "Return of the Kane." Because he's not a total asshole, and he's on anti-depressents, and he knows that Veronica's his sister, and...
Oh. Is that why Keith went after... cos that's... that seems like too easy an answer. Dammit! I should watch the next episode. Which might, possibly, have some answers.
[episode 8: "Like a Virgin"]
Okay, randomly? Really long teaser! I notice these things, because I'm a dork.
Aha. The infamous Mac appears! (For some reason, I thought she was played by Aly, but evidentally no, that's someone else.)
Eh. I'm not as fold of Mac as I was expecting to be. I'm not even sure I knew who she was, but she kind of... well, she should have been cool, because nerdtastic smart girls who manage to beat the system are hot, but she didn't seem to have much of a personality. Eh.
Yay, Keith got to kick ass, and Wallace! OMG Wallace! Who has a girlfriend who hasn't recurred since "Wrath of Con"? Heh. I'm a total Veronica/Wallace 'shipper, probably the ONLY ONE IN THE FANDOM. omg. Since I 'ship Anything That Moves, and am having serious trouble not 'shipping Veronica with her frelling father (but omg! There could be an AU! Where Veronica's mom and Mr. Kane (whose first name I can't remember, shut up) stayed together and raised Veronica, and then Keith/Veronica wouldn't be incest omfg! (I am a bad, bad person)
(The Veronica Mars theme gets stuck in my head ALL THE FRELLING TIME.)
Spoilers past episode eight would not be appreciated.
