I am genuinely curious about the results of this and whether there will be any consensus whatsoever.

I couldn't resist. Sort the characters of...

[Poll #526751]

[Poll #526752]

[Poll #526753]

[Poll #526754]

[Poll #526755]

[Poll #526756]

[Poll #526757]

[Poll #526758]

[Poll #526759]

This might be kind of a trick question, but...

[Poll #526760]

Will obviously write more once results get more conclusive, but first of all I find it intersting that all the unanimous ones are either Gryff or Slyth -- I think because these two houses are the ones best defined in canon. I'm also amused by the characters people seem most torn by: Logan Echolls and Alison Cameron. Heeeee!

I can't wait to do the results post!

You are encouraged, as always, to pimp. :)

Interesting results so far. I'm wondering if people sorted some of the older characters as they are or as they were when they were adolescents

I really don't have anything to say. I just wanted to use this icon that I made a long time ago.

if I can ever get animation to work, I want a 4 tiered icon that has Wesley in all 4 houses -- depending on the era and the condition of his hair, he could be all of the above.

I'd say that Wesley definitely goes in Slytherin, during all periods. He has a cold ruthlessness in him in order to gain his gouls. An urge to do anything to accomplish the goal he's set, wether that's saving the world, stealing Angel's son away from him or sacrificing Willow for the greater good (way back in s3 of Buffy).

Hmm, I can see that. But on the other hand, Harry COULD be a Slytherin, but he goes Gryffindor because he doesn't WANT to be Slytherin. And I'd say it takes Wes until AtS S4 to let the Slytherin side take over.

Hee, love your house/pairings.

though as for posturing, I don't know. . .I always liked the idea that Watcher Wes was as much of a pose as any of the others. i sort of see him most himself in season 2, and early season 3 of Angel, when he's really starting to find people he can be comfortable around (and I think it's Gunn, particularly, who does him worlds of good here). Then he gets bitchslapped by fate repeatedly in S3 and everything we see after that is some kind of a pose. Of course, one of the things I like about the Jossverse is that EVERYBODY is some kind of poser. Which, I think, reflects reality very well.

I have a big unified theory of poserdom coming soon to my LJ. i swear.

Which leads me to something I've been thinking about before this meme popped up.
What is Ravenclaw really?
I mean, I sort of get the point of the other three but Ravenclaw is very vague to me.

Any thought?

The houses are supposed to reflect the person's deepest soul characteristic. Gryffindor is for courage, Hufflepuff for loyalty, Ravenclaw for academic curiousity, and Slytherin for practicality. (There are less complimentary characteristics that the students apply to each house, but the Sorting Hat is looking for these ones.) The fact that Hermione loves books and learning might make her seem like a Ravenclaw, but she has a core of courage hidden beneath her bookishness that the Hat decided was her true self.

I think intelligence is used in the book, but I'm not sure that it's really the correct word. There do seem to be some bookish but DUMB Ravenclaws. Academic curiousity it my own term, but I think it gets much closer to what JKR was getting at. I almost said "enlightened self-interest" for Slytherin, but that seemed too much of a loaded term. Ambition is probably better than practicality.

I'm writing an entry at this very moment in which I pimp this poll. I think it's great.

Thanks for your comments. They've clarified a lot for me, and have made me rethink some of my choices.

Very cool.

There do seem to be some bookish but DUMB Ravenclaws.

In D&D they divided up learning into Intelligence and Wisdom. Intelligence was much more about book learning and how to do, while Wisdom was understanding the morals and ethics of knowing what to do.

Academics are often Intelligent but not Wise - Snape. Haggrid's the opposite; he wouldn't do well on the intelligence scale, but he would be very high on the wisdom scale.

I did the polls but mostly reminded myself why the sorting hat thing irritates me. Everyone has some of each, depending on when, or the exact definitions you're working with. People don't fit in boxes.

One thing that I've noticed in the books is that most of the characters that have commented on their experience with the hat (Harry and Hermione are the ones I'm thinking primarily about) - were given a *choice*. The hat "tempted" Harry with Slytherin (which I refuse to believe equates with "evil", not that I'm saying anyone here has expressed that, but the fandom (and heck, the chars in the books) often do so) and he (Harry) insisted on Gryffindor.

Hermione was apparently offered Ravenclaw as a choice but ended up selecting Gryffindor, too.

If that is, in fact, a pattern of sorts, then it makes the process much less cut and dry on the hat's part. And a much more intriguing point to look at with the other characters as well. Particularly the ones that don't always seem to "fit" their house on the surface.

*blinks* ...wow. It's interesting to see how much I seem to disagree with the rest of fandom-at-large. heh.

i did House, i don't remember enough of BSC to do this, and I pretty much agree with HP on everything.. except i think Wormtail should have been house-less. because i suppose it's brave to stand up against your friends, but he did it as a result of cowardice, which essentially neutralizes the bravery in it.. and there's no house for "utter cowardice." i don't see him as cunning enough to be a slytherin, not clever enough to be a ravenclaw, certainly lacking on the loyalty front for hufflepuff, and well, that leaves no one.

hm.
