rosewildeirish. 394 words. Rodney attending his sister's wedding.]
The Obligations of Fraternity
Rodney hadn't been home since he left for school. He hadn't wanted to come home, hadn't been wanted at home, and had seen no reason to come home.
But Jeanie was getting married.
Jeanie was selling out to the chauvinist system she'd raged against for all of Rodney's adolescence, buying into the tax breaks and the two-parent household. She was creating a family very much like the one Rodney had tried to escape from.
And he was flying from Russia to Canada on a very expensive flight with a five in the morning layover in Heathrow to watch her sell out. And he was doing it with a smile on his face -- well, okay, somewhere in the vicinity of his face -- because she'd already spent all that money on his portion of roast beef and he didn't want it to go to waste.
Also, because he'd get to tell everyone that he couldn't talk about his work because it was classified -- and he wouldn't be lying, for once. Also, again, he was glad that someone would be passing the McKay genius genes on to the next generation, since it seemed more and more unlikely that it would be him. And there was the possibility, always exciting, that Jeanie's guy would turn out to be even worse than the boyfriend she'd had when McKay left, in which case he would get the chance to make a fool of himself defending her honor.
There was every likelihood that the wedding would be well attended by the very same people who'd told him, the last time he'd seen them, that he was Least Likely To Get Laid, Ever.
There was the possibility that a vital call would come in from Major Carter while he was away, and that she would be so disappointed that she wouldn't call back. Going to Jeanie's wedding could result in an international disaster.
And the airplane seat was the most uncomfortable place he'd ever had to rest his ass. (The food, on the other hand, was excellent.)
The more he thought about it, the stupider it was -- but on the other hand, she was his sister. And he loved her.
