+nominees for SyFy portal's best TV thingies:
[cut for vague spoilers through: "Not Fade Away," "Prometheus Unbound," and "The Gift". Also cut for being long.]
Best actor, TV:
Ben Browder, "Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars"
Joe Flanigan, "Stargate: Atlantis"
OMG. NO competition whatsoever. Just none. I'm sorry. I'm a horrible Farscape snob, I know, but nothing Joe Flannigan did, not even in "Eye" which was when I liked Sheppard best, can possibly measure up to BB's excellence. This theme will dominate throughout my thoughts on these...
Best Actress, TV:
Claudia Black, "Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars"
Amanda Tapping, "Stargate SG-1"
Again, love Sam very much, and she's very cute and all, but.. AERYN. OMG. Again, no competition.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/Television
David Hewlett, "Stargate: Atlantis"
Michael Shanks, "Stargate SG-1"
I'm torn here between MS and DH, of course (since I don't watch the other shows). I am fond of MS's acting, but on the whole I'd have to say DH for the pitch-perfect creation of an almost brand-new character.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS/Television
Amy Acker, "Angel"
Rachel Luttrell, "Stargate: Atlantis"
Ha. Ha. Ha. No competition whatsoever. One of these actors brought you Illyria. One did not.
BEST SPECIAL GUEST/Television
Claudia Black, "Prometheus Unbound," Stargate SG-1
.... I'm so torn. Because the only one of these I know is of course our gal Claudia, but her talent in "Prometheus Unbound" was criminally underused.
BEST EPISODE/Television
"Not Fade Away," Angel
"Prometheus Unbound," Stargate SG-1
My mind is totally boggled by this one. Totally boggled. One of these episodes was stellar and moving and tragic. The other was... Claudia Black in a storm trooper uniform making with the sex with Daniel. How is this possibly in the same league as NFA? Just.... *brain boom*
+My Diary, Amy found her third grade diary, and ten entries have been painstakingly colored with crayon and narrated by experts to preserve the essence of the third grade gestalt.
+My Dinner With Catharine MacKinnon: And Other Hazards of Theorizing Virtual Rape by Julian Dibbell. In my ongoing efforts to remember whether it was MacKinnon or Dworkin who taught me how to write pr0n, I stumbled across this, which I found quite readable and contains the following description of an RPG-space: "a permanently, radically liminal ground on which the real and the imagined meet on equal terms." Possibly worth a look-see,
cheese_munkey?
+Just attended a thesis defense. OMG, I'm glad I'm not letting her at my paper. [/cryptic]
+lookie! I wrote a character study for

_elektra maked a lust thread. My name isn't on there once. *cries*
+just took final exam. Yay? Got A on teh_art_paper. Going to show once again that no one at this school has any taste whatsoever.
+thanks to everyone who signed up for the OT3+thon so far. Y'all rock super-much.
+Assignments for the BSC ficathon and for the Buffy/Giles ficathon are in. Both of them seem writable, though I will probably end up doing the BSC person's second choice and I think I have discovered a new thing I can't stand in requests, to go along with "no plotless fic." And what might that be? "No kinky sex." Because I have made it my purpose in fandom to write only kinky sex, in the sense that it's not strict, missionary style, vanilla and lace, infused-with-ugly-cultural-meaning sex. Because sex has meaning and if the sex I write is normative than I'm failing in my mission to shake things up a little.
Also, it'll really be time soon to buckle down and write all these fics I've signed up for.

Date: 2005-04-12 02:23 pm (UTC)What? No kinky sex? But that's - that's - that's what make sex worth reading about. Otherwise it's just mutual wanking. But the kink makes it yummy and delicious and scrumptious and *worth even looking at*.
No kinky sex.
I won't hear of it.
I must now go write kinky sex. There's just not enough of it in the world.
Viva la Kinky Sex.
Also - check the lust thread.

And ohgod, it would have to be All About Mary Anne. Actually, you could make that pairing all screwed up and dark, with both wanting Mary Anne and them being together being the only way they could get to her and it would be hateful and sowrong and...
No, I'd still prefer the Kristy/Mary Anne.

Seriously, I've decided that I just hate any mention of sex in ficathon requirements. An author should be able to say where the relationship goes, and physicality can not be divorced from relationships in a decent fic. Being told that you have to include or exclude sex isn't giving the author a challenge, but rather a straightjacket. As for "kink," who the hell is to say what's kink and what isn't? I mean, yes, some extreme kinks (such as scat or bloodplay) can be agreed upon by everyone, but often times one person's kink is another person's norm. I don't see the sex in your stories are kinky (sorry 'bout that), but rather just personal. Well, maybe the vomit sex was a bit kinky....

Date: 2005-04-12 02:56 pm (UTC)Yanno, that might be very fair. Although seriously, there are some pairings that love for the big squishy brainfucks and would prefer not to be all explicit sex-wise. In my own SG OT3 thon, I requested the OT4 (yay team!) minus explicit sex because I'm more interested in the dynamics of the four of them than the big foursome sex.
I don't see the sex in your stories are kinky (sorry 'bout that), but rather just personal. Well, maybe the vomit sex was a bit kinky....
*snerk* See, I don't think most of the sex I write is all that kinky in terms of specific kinks, like use of objects or exceedingly unconventional positions or hanging from the chandeliers or anything, but more mental kink. Like Wes and Lilah having sex in Angel's bed. And in hetsex, I tend to write the girl on the top a lot. I don't know how unconventional that is irl, but it strikes me as "kinky" 'cos it's not strictly missionary-style penis-in-vagina sex. But then, obviously, I over-intellectualize all the sex I write, ever.
And isn't the very fact of Buffy and Giles having sex at all kinky because it's already defying a societal norm (because of the age difference)?
Whoops... I think I got my rant on.

Date: 2005-04-12 03:59 pm (UTC)Well, depending on when you write it in the series the pairing B/G might be considered kinky, if not illegal. I personally don't go there, when I write B/G she's always over 17. But after she turns 17, I would consider it unconventional, but I wouldn't call it kinky if they just had vanilla sex. But if they, for example, had sex on the hood of a police car...hehehe.
When I was growing up (back in the dark ages...grins) I used to read lots of romances, classic and modern. A LOT of them had the male quite a bit older than the female. The girl was usually just out of school if that and the guy was older...sometimes a lot older. For example Bronte's Jane Eyre and Rochester. When I was in high school I had crushes on older actors like Clark Gable and Clint Eastwood. (I still think he's sexy LOL)
To me, kink is when you add toys, bondage, sex in public places, spankings, etc. I don't think position really matters to kink unless it is something really unusual like in a doctor's office on a table with their feet up in stirrups or as you said, hanging from a chandelier. The girl on top seems to be a lot more common...at least if you go by R rated movies. LOL I think the directors just like to see the boobs bobbing.
Then you have slash, which by definition would be considered kinky on its own.
And of course, one person's kink may be another person's squick, but that's a whole other can of worms. I love Buffy/Giles, but my 21 year old daughter can't stand the idea of it.

Date: 2005-04-12 06:15 pm (UTC)I agree. I don't think anyone clicking on a NC-17 fic would find alternate (and boy, do I hate using that word here!) sexual positions to be kinky. Not even the hanging from the chandeliers! Some people might warn for anal sex in a het fic, but I wouldn't. When I think of "kink," I think of really alternate play, such as BDSM or exhibitionism or cross-dressing. I think that you can probably follow your muse pretty far before you get into trouble.
And of course, one person's kink may be another person's squick, but that's a whole other can of worms. I love Buffy/Giles, but my 21 year old daughter can't stand the idea of it.
I've noticed that younger people who pride themselves on being oh-so-tolerant when it comes to incest and chan and non-con and a whole plethora of other things that squick me are the very first to go "ewwww" to cross-gen relationships in which both parties are adults. Despite what they say, it ISN'T an age thing, because many are Spuffy or Snarry fans. No, it appears to be an entirely aesthetic thing and that bothers me. A lot.
Ooh, between the three of us, a rant is boiling up somewhere... *grin*

I would agree with you and wonder if there's sort of this conflicting point of view where you've got me, saying basically, any sex that isn't normative is kinky, and that's a good thing, and then other people saying, say, "gay sex isn't kinky; it's just another way of being normal!" And I know my usage of kink is kind of broad and

Hmmm. I think it's because to me, a lot the kink I write (or pretend I write, or would write if I weren't lazy!) is more cerebral than that. It's kinky because of say, power issues, or fidelity issues, or feelings/lack of feelings, or the participants, or whatever, not because of the acts, per se. And I realize that's not neccessarily a common definition, hence rant! that will soon be appearing from somewhere in my brain.
