two more items off the to-do list:
Apr. 9th, 2005 12:52 pmI just completely revamped my user interests for the first time in three years of LJing. I've added and subtracted some over the course of those three years, but this is the first time I just sat down and entirely redid it. For the record, here are the ones on the new list unique to me: Aeryn/Zhaan, Blackie Ryan, Blackie/Sean, extracanonical pairings, fishing as metaphor, gvambat, mcgonagall/hermione, multishippers, polyfannishness, purple plastic watches, trifictionality, tritextuality, unpopular fannish opinions. Come on. I KNOW I'm not the only one interested in "fishing as metaphor." :p
fannish5: Name five reasons you hate spoilers
1. The rest all follow from number 1: spoilers detract from my enjoyment of new text. I hate having the end of a story ruined for me, and I like being surprised, and since I'm one of those three people who's never seen TV before, yes, I am surprised by totally obvious plot twists that everyone else saw coming a mile away. I like being surprised, and when I'm spoiled for a plot twist, it won't surprise me.
2. If I have a spoiler for a given episode/book/season, I'll spend my time waiting for the spoiler to come true rather than paying attention to the text on its own merits. If I know that "someone" is going to die, I'll spend the whole time wondering who it is and when it's going to happen. This, too, detracts from my ability to enjoy the text on its own terms.
3. Spoilers cause bad fanfic. Just look at all the "Fallen" fics written before "Fallen" aired, and all the "Heroes" fix-its that pre-dated "Heroes by several months.
4. Spoilers cause flamewars. It's true! Every single day, there's a spoiler flamewar linked on fandom_wank. If spoilers weren't released, this wouldn't happen.
5. When false, great disappointment is caused. Most of the Sam/Daniel 'shippers on my flist can think of at least one particularly painful instance. Having one's hopes artificially inflated is not fun at all.
According to news.au, likely new Popes are Dionigi Tettamanzi of Italy and Francis Arinze of Nigeria.
Other possible contenders include Germany's Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's doctrinal enforcer who delivered the homily at John Paul's funeral; Claudio Hummes, the Archbishop of Sao Paulo in Brazil; and Honduran Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga. I'm still confused about which one is Luis Menendez. I note with sadness that Sean Cronin seems an unlikely choice. I should probably keep checking Google news, but suspect I'll just let LJ tell me when they choose someone.

Honestly, no one has any freaking clue. It just probably won't be an American.

Date: 2005-04-10 11:47 pm (UTC)Although whoever is chosen, I can't imagine I'll be happy with the choice, seeing as how the College of Cardinals was chosen by Jean Paul II and all that. Except for Ratzinger and two other guys.
How many popes do you think it will be until the magisterium finally regains its Vatican II momentum?

Okay, I'll bite. What are trifictionality and tritextuality? Because they sound absolutely fascinating.
