Since we all had so much fun with the Jossverse characters' poll (see the results here,) I invite all of you to fill out a pair of polls on Gateverse characters! I've separated SG-1 from Atlantis, and have decided, after some thought, to poll you only on main titles characters, with a few obvious exceptions. (I was more generous in Atlantis, since there are fewer minor characters and they seem to be slightly more popular than recurring characters like Walter...)

Scroll down to find the SG-1 questions; they're after the 'Lantis questions. Thanks to everyone who's filled this out so far and to everyone who pimped!

If you haven't written about a given character, don't like them, etc, just skip over them entirely, and feel free to answer the questions you can.

Please tick the ticky box if and only if you take the poll. I'd like to have an accurate tally.

There are general spoilers for the beginning of S8 in this poll.

[Poll #467073]

[Poll #467074]

And that's all! Discuss if you have anything to discuss, and please pimp like mad!

The aliens are always tricky, I think, even for the staff writers. It's so easy to fall into the trap of hey, they're alien, they speak in complete sentences! and forget to go any further.

It's funny answering the would you like them in real life? question, cause so many of my fav characters are my favs because of them being absolute pains in the ass. Like Daniel. I was on the fence about that one.

Rodney doesn't talk to me at *all*, which I feel like makes me the freak of fandom. The geek thing just isn't enough in common. I can't seem to get rude enough when I write him.

Verdict: EVERYONE IS SEXY!!!

Also: I just haven't seen enough of Atlantis for people's voices to come as easily, because on SG-1 we've just had so much dialogue to pick through. It would be sad to run an actual word count on how much text Ford has had this season.

Also: HAHAHAHAHA re: casting spoiler. I have no idea if you're talking about an actual character or poking fun at fandom, but it entertains me like mad.

"ze" is an excellent pronoun and we should keep it.

And... I suppose the Atlantis characters have clicked for me as well in a lot of ways. I just haven't written as much of some of them as I'd like to to really *get* it -- characters like Carson and Ford haven't gotten much page time. Carson, mostly, because I'm yet to get a handle on his speech style and the linguist in me can't stand the idea of just tossing the word "wee" at everything and calling it even! ;)

People have told me that I capture Rodney's voice well. I'd like to think so, but I don't know that it's easy yet.

Re Carson, we dont in Scotland say "wee" all the time. I was always taught in writing class never to write an accent, write in proper English and let the reader put in the accent in. Besides accents are more about rhythms of speech rather than words. Drives me mad when I see Carson fics and he's talking about crap like "..being with child". Trust me, they'd never say that in Paisley. "Up the spout" maybe, "having a baby" or maybe even "pregnant".

So you can keep your "wees" out your fic and I'll be happy, at least I won't cringe at it! (not that I would at any of your fic darling!)

I was also taught that in writing class! However, there's a difference between *accents* (you know, mispelling words on purpose to indicate how they're pronounced) and *dialects* where a character actually uses a different word. (like, say, "wee", although not actually "wee" since you've just set me straight on that one.)

Clearly, the answer is both to get a beta from the appropriate geographical region *and* to pay more attention to on-screen dialogue. :)

Ha, I wouldn't pay that much attention to Carson's dialogue as they don't get it right either!

But that's just my opinion, I object to his general whininess anyway, here's hoping they "toughen" him up for next season.

Hmm, I was so much easier on the SG folk than I was on the Jossverse characters. Possibly because there are fewer SG folk, and if I hadn't ticked off that I liked Sam and Weir as characters, it would've meant I only liked two women out of the entire franchise, and that's pretty sad. I was kind of hesitant though, because while I "like" Sam and Weir in a "I sometimes find their characters interesting" they are pretty secondary compared to my undying love of McKay, Sheppard, Teyla, Jack, and Daniel.

Also, I was much easier (heh, I was easy *g*) when it came to saying who was sexy. I checked off McKay and Zelenka! I had much higher standards with the Jossverse guys ;)

I've only ever written three fics, and they were all about John and Elizabeth, however, I'm about to write a chapter with Teyla in it. I really find Teyla tedious, and I'm going to have to frankly change her character to make her in anyway interesting to me, and therefore my readers. If I ever write it.

Rodney, I find intimidating, because he is just so good, I want to get him perfectly, perhaps that gets in the way.

Carson, easy, but then I'm Scottish.

hee! I love being Scottish!

Funny I just checked the fic I've written that had Carson in it, and found I had the word "wee" three times in one sentence. *smacks-cliche-ridden-Scottish-writing*

You're the joy sadhana person aren't you? I think that's a fabulous day to end the day by the way.

Another vote for loving 'Casting Spoiler', though I'm a little frightened at the possibility that anyone would've actually included them in fic already.

There were tons of descension stories that were written based on the spoilers for Fallen. When people know a Big Event is coming, it makes sense that they would explore the possibilities through fanfic, especially if you don't think the show's going to write it the way you want to see it.
