lyrics guessing game

I am so confused about this meme where you list your favorite music artists and people guess your favorite song by that artist. Because:
1. As you might have guessed from my 'shipping preferences, the word "favorite" confuses me
2. I really doubt my flist would know my favorite songs, even if I did have them
3. No one's heard of most of my favorite artists.
So instead, let's play a lyrics game. I'll try to be generous and choose mostly songs you might actually have heard.
1. That girl thinks she's the queen of the neighborhood Bikini Kill - Rebel Girl
2. I love you, and the song that I sing is the only way that I can explain Cat Stevens - Two Fine People
3. Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy Cat Stevens - Father and Son
4. soon my face will be on every magazine, and my voice will be on every frequency Tegan and Sara - Superstar
5. long time, short time, any time at all, cost a little extra if you want to take all year Les Mis - Lovely Ladies
6. Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, who are you, what have you sacrificed? Jesus Christ Superstar - Superstar
7. Bonjour, bonjour, bonjour bonjour bonjour! There goes the baker with his tray like always Beauty and the Beast - Belle
8. skinned our hearts and skinned our knees/goodbye my friend it's hard to die Cat Stevens - Seasons in the Sun
9. now how absurd to swallow a bird Raffi - I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
10. But I gave it up, and all for love, it was his career or mine Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, and Richard Shindell - The Ballad of Mary Magdalen
And now (appropriately) I really must go work on my thesis. Help?
ETA: aaand they've all been guessed. Damn, you guys are good. Or bored. :p

Okay, the version I knew was recorded by Terry Jacks in 1974. The lyrics are by Rod McKuen and are themselves a translation of the French tune "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man") by Jacques Brel. Thought I recalled a Jacques Brel connection.
The full scoop (with a distinctly unflattering spin) is here... and that's doubtless waaaay more than you ever wanted to know. *g*

Date: 2005-04-01 06:01 am (UTC)That's a Cat Stevens song as well. I know the whole song, but for the life of me I can't recall the name. The chorus keeps having lines starting with "I love you"... moutains to sand... old man... etc. It's one of my favorite Cat Stevens song. Dammit, what is the name? This is really going to frustrate me, not being able to remember....
