sk8eeyore! Sarah! Guess who I met today? JAN OMG! She was running the discussion re: putting together a Christian fellowship for moderate-liberal Christians on campus, and OMG JAN!
There was much glee, and she says you and I resemble each other and should meet sometime. And Jan yay!
OMG!!!!!!!!!! I knew she was going to a thing in Staunton today but I totally didn't put any of that together!!! OMG isn't she the sparkliest?! How did it come about that you guys talked? I mean how did you explain the connection? eeeeeeee I'm so happy that you got to share in some Jan-love!!! :D
That really makes my day, obviously. In fact, my whole weekend...
Hee, it was so bizarre... they're putting together this fellowship thingie and everyone at church was all "you should go to the meeting!" So I did and was feeling kind of out of place and then they were talking about the woman who was going to be leading our discussion and I heard the words "Hollins" and "Jan" and almost died of shock, so I stuck around, and then she finally got there (about an hour late, 'cos she got lost).
When we went around the circle introducing ourselves, I was just like, ah, what the heck, and after I do name, year, religious affiliation I go, "Oh, and Jan? I'm a friend of Sarah's and am really, really shocked and delighted to meet you." So yeah, I basically gleed all over the conference room.
Then after the (very long) meeting, she strikes up a conversation with me and is all, "So, how do you know Sarah? Are you from Pennsylvania too?" I swallowed the shame and said, "No, we met online." Which surprised her, I think, because of the whole stigma thing people who don't know the internet have about online friendships, and I think she was surprised that you and I have so much in common... yeah. I shook her hand and said I'd heard so many wonderful things about her and was delighed to meet her and she sort of laughed and said I shouldn't trust all I hear. :)
JAN! I was thrilled to meet her, obviously, and it totally made *my* weekend, too... She was a really cool person (of course) and it was also wonderful knowing how much she means to *you* and being able to look at this woman, who's otherwise just the random chaplain leading our meeting, as Sarah's Jan and trying to see in her what you see in her. It was *wonderful*
Squee. Such a good story. I definitely needed those warm fuzzies. I'm so happy and thankful that you went and that you talked to her. I know that if it had been me in that position, assuming I even would have gone, I would have wanted to leave when I felt out of place and I would have felt terribly nervous about approaching somebody I hadn't met before.
I'm sure she'll be mentioning it to me as soon as she gets back. (It'll be interesting explaining the online angle to her, too!) Yay for unexpected gifts of grace! :D
This afternoon I facilitated a consultation to form a new group at Mary Baldwin College and met a friend of yours—Ruth Ellen. She sent you her greetings. She’s lovely, smart, P & R major, and even looks a bit like you. I hope you’ll have opportunity to meet her. I wonder if I can help make this happen too.
Ruth Graham, black sheep daughter of Billy Graham is speaking at MBC on Wednesday march 16 and I may try to take a group from HCF and other Christian groups to hear here. I wonder if you want to go.
Ooh so there's a possibility I could meet you in March? :D
Hee, if you're going to hear Ruth Graham speak, I can skip tutoring that night (ahh, the tutoring thing! I was the only person at the meeting who couldn't meet on Wednesday nights because I tutor *every* night. I was a thorough pain in the ass about this) and we could meet then. If you'd like to go, and if you're free, I can make sure my schedule is free, and we can plan that.
And oh yes... I'm glad I could add some fuzziness to your weekend. *hugs hard*.
I definately *did* want to leave, but knowing that Jan would be there made me hang in there -- and it was worth it, if only to meet her and then getting to share the experience with you. GLEE!
