Dec. 10th, 2004 11:58 amI lost a day in there somewhere...
fannish5, as apparently it is actually Friday...!
What 5 characters perform their actual jobs well? (Characters from Clerks need not apply.)
1. General Hammond, Stargate SG-1. Kept the SGC running smoothly for 7 years. Suffered some casualties, got too emotionally involved at times, but kept diplomatic relationships up and running, did not get the Earth blown up, and continued to expand his teams. Three thumbs up for a job well done.
2. Minerva McGonagall, Harry Potter. Teaches Transfiguration. Appears competant, which is more than can be said for most of her colleagues. Is house-biased, but considerably less so than other professors cough Snape cough. Hasn't gotten anyone killed yet. Occassionally deputy headmistress.
3. Janet Fraiser, Stargate SG-1. Incredible doctor in a high-stress environment, kept things running smoothly, saved a lot of lives, shot professional distance all to hell re: SG-1, but cared and cared deeply and was good at what she did.
4. Seamus Harper, Andromeda. As ship's engineer, he kept Rommie in parts, kept her flying, kept the Slipstream drive online, and all against pretty unwieldy odds. He was a bit schizophrenic at times, but dammit, he could be counted on to do his job.
5. Sam Carter, Stargate SG-1. Two promotions in five years. I'd say she's doing something right.
6. Xander Harris, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "I'm becoming the kind of person you want to have around after a crazed robot attack."
You might notice a bit of an SG-1 bias here. It's not accidental. I thought long and hard, and here's why I eliminated people from other fanda:
-No one on Farscape has a real job except the villains, who all suck at their jobs (re: keeping the peace) since they become obsessed with John. Infalliably. I could almost include Braca, because he is good at being an obedient little bitch, but ultimately decided against it.
-I don't consider anyone on Atlantis especially competant. Weir? No. Ford? No. Sheppard? Big question mark, sucks at obeying orders. McKay? Uhh, not really. Beckett? Has got to get used to the fact that he's in a frelling military environment. Sorry.
-It's unclear what people's jobs are on Drom. And it's hard to separate people's jobs from their larger goals in life.
-Everyone on Dark Angel who has a job pretty much hates it and sucks at it.
-Everyone at Angel Investigations frankly reeeeally sucks at their job, especially if "avert the apocalypse" is in the job description. (Might want to rethink including some of the Angel villains, though. Hmm.)
-Not sure how you define job success for a Watcher, but I'm guessing neither Giles nor Wesley is it.
Roooommate, come back with food!
I've discovered Angel: No Limits (a virtual S6). It's CRACK in the good sense (i.e., highly addictive.)

Date: 2004-12-11 12:42 am (UTC)Gotta say that we don't have any evidence that Ford is bad at his job. His job is to do what he's told and to shoot at things. He does both just fine. Especially the doing what he's told part. Mmmmn, commandporn.
