my first lines
Oct. 8th, 2004 12:17 amSo. Here they are. Sixty-odd first lines of fanfic. Almost all the 'Gate stuff in here is online somewhere; almost none of the Buffy stuff is (because it's not finished.) So here are some teasers for things yet to come.
Do as you like with these: put them in drabbles, put them in ficlets, put them in novels. Change the names, leave the names, edit them, what have you. Post the drabbles here, there, everywhere. Guess where they came from. Marvel at their inanity. Ignore them. Up to you.
These are in alphabetical order and, as a unit, rated R.
Conclusion: Okay, so obviously I like to begin my fics with good, strong, declarative sentences. Most of which contain the main characters' names. Some of which could serve as summaries for the entire fic. And obviously, my fic is very, very Daniel-centric, Willow-centric, Tara-centric, and Sam-centric.

- "Everyone turn away. I want no witnesses."
- "I think we're in love," said Daniel, sort of shyly, hitching up his jeans and adjusting his glasses unconsciously, falling into step a pace or two behind Sam.
- "This buddy of mine, this pal, this chum, this ex-lover, has-"
- "Coffee beans," said Daniel, staring at the coffee paraphernalia on the briefing room table.
- "I wish we'd thought to bring porn," said Sheppard, for perhaps the fifth time that evening.
- "It doesn't work, does it, Sam?"
- "Leave me the fuck alone!" he said.

- "Well, this is... awkward," says Colonel O'Neill.

- He had said he wanted time apart.
- He stumbled up the last steps, which was allowed, as he was out of sight now.
- He was in England for six months and received one letter.
- He's screaming for me, I can hear him, it's too late, he's gone, he's calling my name.
- I've already decided.
- In public, they were the most affirming team imaginable.
- It began like a fairy tale, with a beautiful princess (Sam supposed that was Sha're) and with a wicked enchanter (and Sam supposed that was Ra), and a handsome prince (and anyone with eyes could see that that was Daniel).

- Oz was lying in bed with a girl named Sondra, his arm draped over her stomach, and he was drawing little circles on her belly, lazy-like.

- Shit.

- Tara woke up before Willow did that morning.
- The first time Sam kissed Rosie, he was thinking about Frodo.
- They were all drunk.

- Trance smiled.
- We were asleep.
- Wesley checked this prophecy.
- When did we become family?
- When Ke'ra kissed him he could see her face in front of him, always just a few inches from him, her lips far away, receding into the distance, her kisses shadows on his lips.
- When Wistful came home from work, she was very tired.
- Willow came back from L.A., her hair tied back in a tight knot, still sobbing, and collapsed into Tara's arms.
- Willow curled up at the foot of her bed, perusing a spellbook Tara had left behind.
- Willow frowned at the collection of stones in front of her.

Date: 2004-10-08 05:54 pm (UTC)Wierd, to realize that while I'm flipping the coin, but there it is. I'm going to Atlantis. I'm going to leave everything I know behind and go to another freaking galaxy. And I'm just pretending to think about it. I already know.
And I know when I decided it, too--long before I got back to the US, anyway.
In the helicopter, when the general said he had no use for me if I didn't.
I don't even know him, and yet, here I am. Going to Atlantis. In another galaxy.
Maybe I just want to fell useful again.

one-track mind? me?
Date: 2004-10-12 03:54 am (UTC)"Are you absolutely sure this is the right station?" Daniel hunkered down to squint at the dial on the portable radio, holding his bottle of beer precariously tilted in mid-air.
"1080, right, sir?" Sam clarified. Jack didn't answer her and didn't warn Daniel about the beer that was about to spill -- Sam because he knew she never forgot numbers, including numbers associated with AM radio stations, and Daniel because warning him wouldn't do any good.
"They haven't even mentioned which team has the bats yet," Daniel complained.
"At bat," Jack corrected. "And it's the right station. There's always a lot of filler between innings. How can you know everything about Ancient Egypt and know nothing about baseball?"
Daniel tilted his beer bottle upright again and found a seat against the porch railing next to Sam. It was unseasonably warm for October, making it almost a crime to watch the early-afternoon playoff game indoors. "I never really felt like I was missing out."
Given the choice, Jack would probably have cared more about hockey at this time of year -- and that was still a bit of a touchy subject, since it was so unfair that he had saved the world just for the players' union to strike -- but this was something special enough to drag him out of his cave of sports mourning.
"You've got to appreciate the history of it, at least. This could be a historic moment."
Sam quirked a grin. "I didn't realize you were interested in history, sir."
Un-American, all of them. "Come on, Carter. You can't tell me your dad never taught you about baseball."
She shrugged. "He had my brother. Besides, I didn't know you cared about Boston sports."
"It's not about that. It's about fighting tradition. Endless hope in the face of endless defeat."
"It is quite noble," Teal'c agreed.
Daniel yawned.
Jack turned up the radio, hoping to silence the unenlightened with the inane babble of the announcers. He could hear the Fenway crowd roaring as Curt Schilling took the mound for Boston for Game Five, do or die for the Yankees, and grinned.
"Noble," he echoed. "Besides, the Yanks beat my Twins."
Re: one-track mind? me?
Date: 2004-10-12 05:20 pm (UTC)Although I so strongly suspect Jack is a Cubs fan... didn't he mention the Cubs somewhere early S1?
But of course he wouldn't root for the Yankees. That would just be wrong. :p

Date: 2004-10-14 02:52 am (UTC)"Speak for yourself," Elizabeth said, as she entered the room.
John looked up in surprise. "Elizabeth. How long have you been standing there?" He frowned at Ford. "How long has she been standing there?"
"I don't know, sir. Sorry, sir."
Elizabeth sat down, uninvited. Her expression was almost a smile, as her eyes caught John's. "If you're bored, Major, I'm sure that some excitement will present itself sooner or later."
"Do you know what I wish we'd thought to bring?" McKay asked. "Extra coffee."
