So all fanda have, first off, the segment devoted to Pairing Wars. You've got your two mutually exclusive pairings and the people who 'ship the one and the people who 'ship the other. Sometimes, these are two pairings that are canon at different times (Bangel vs Spuffy), or two potentially canonical pairings (R/Hr vs H/Hr) or pairings that are canonical in translations to other media (L/A vs L/G), or the old standby of slash vs het (J/D vs J/S).

Then you've got the Token Femslash, which will be the most obvious f/f pairing and probably consist of the only two important females in the source material. The Token Femslashers are various degrees of batshit, but unless they're in the Jossverse 'shipping W/T, they realize their pairing isn't canon and just write their fic.

Then you've got your Perfectly Innocuous Slashers who 'ship the most harmless, innocent slash pairing possible, like Sam/Frodo, so that the rabid anti-slashers can say "lookit ewww!" and the slashers can say "but it harms none!" I suppose the H/D-of-doom should also fall into this category, although given how enlightened HP is...

it has to have a Perfectly Innocuous Shota Pairing. Once a fandom has favorably resolved the slash issue, it must immediately set about trying to resolve the shota issue. (Shota-con, just for the record, =underage boys. Loli-con =underage girls. I'm going to drive Z insane by using "shota" to mean both.) So you've got your Snarry or your Giles/Buffy so that the anti-shota people can say "ewww!" and the shota people can say "it harms none!"

You occasionally have Other Popular Pairings which, as long as they're het or as your fandom has resolved the slash issue, no one will care about. Like Sam/Daniel, like Merry/Pippin, like Willow/Xander, they are too cute for anyone to care.

And then you've got your crack addicts. Who will ship anyone who moves/anyone else who moves, or possibly, person who moves A/person who moves A, using some combination of time travel, Polyjuice, body-switching spells, robots, and alternate realities.

The crack addicts don't care about canon, or chemistry, or even prettiness. They write Hagrid/Buckbeak. They write Mayor/Dawn (okay, I made that one up.) They write Daniel/Chaka and, God help us, Jack/Kinsey.

I've finally reached the bottom of the barrel. I started off as a pairing-war 'shipper of J/D, then (hopefully) got over the pairing-war attitude and just treated it as innocuous slash, I briefly flirted with other not particularly popular pairings (Sam/Daniel), found great joy forever in my shota pairing of doom, and now... well, I still 'ship some things with my whole heart and soul, but at heart, I am, and always have been, just a crack!shipper.

Which all goes to explain why I spent just about all of last night writing Fred/Tara.

And dammit, now it's my new OTP.

Which leads me to a question: what are the pairings you won't see broken up for love or money. The deeper I get into fandom, the less of these there are.

My Tolkien pairings (L/G and F/S) are just set in canon. They cannot be harmed. They are truth.

Holmes/Watson likewise (but even that I'll tarnish with some Holmes/Moriarty crack).

Dark Angel: Oddly, while Logan/other is okay (although I don't like any of the available "others" to 'ship him with), Max/other just squicks me.

Stargate SG-1: I might be in the minority here, but Jack/Sara and Daniel/Sha're, while the marriages are actually intact, are just sancrosanct. I simply can't read Daniel with anyone else pre-FiaD. It rings untrue.

Most canon pairings I don't want broken, but if you can do it realistically, I'm game. Just not so with the above-mentioned. How about you? Are you pairing-monogamous, or crack!pairings all the way?

I've seen it...

OOOOOH! LET'S SEE! LET'S SEE! LET'S SEE! *squees madly*

:p

Other sacrosant pairings...well, there are a few exceptions, but John/Aeryn comes close.

*points out that there are a lot more characters in Farscape*

*shrug*

And of course, there's always the very cheerful Holmes/cocaine bottle.

I need a "Don't kill me, it's canon" icon.

>< Really? Man, that's some sick shit.

Yeah. Yeah, it really is. People are really twisted.

Yeah, but John/Scorpy. I mean, I know, I know, but... yeah.

Hey, if you're going to let in Holmes/Moriarty...

:p

I'm between the two. *grin* I'm a multishipper, but...well...for example, Jack/Thor does nothing for me. :-o I also don't have any adult/underage pairings--the closest I come is Giles/Anya (but Anya's really 1100 years old so that doesn't count) and Wolverine/Rogue (but only set after Rogue's majority).

But hmm...I think the only pairings I consider inviolable are characters who are married in canon--at least for the duration of that marriage. Jonathan/Martha, Daniel/Sha're, Jack/Sara (like you *g*), Zoe/Wash, Helen/Will...you get the idea. :-) But even there I'll entertain AUs where the characters are with someone else, just so long as the marriage doesn't exist or has ended as of the story. Much as I love Daniel/Sam, like you I won't read it if it's set pre-FiaD in the canon universe. And just "ignoring the Sha're issue" doesn't count in my book as an acceptable AU--the person has to *explain* why Sha're is not an issue and, if she never existed, why Daniel joined the SGC and/or stayed on Abydos in the first place.

I'm more likely to have anti-OTPs--pairings that I just don't like and don't want to see regardless, can't write and can only read in the hands of an author I *really* trust. Ironically, these are frequently canon or near-canon pairings: Jack/Sam, Doggett/Reyes, Trip/T'Pol...*sigh*

So that just makes me unclassifiable, right? ;-) Oh well...*g*
