"No Baileys? No schnapps? Not even a shot of blood? Just hot chocolate? You know I usually depend on your liquor consumption to pay the exorbitant damage insurance, which I don't need to remind you is your fault to begin with."

"So pour yourself something and put it on my tab."

"Normally I already would've, pumpkin, but tonight drinking alone seems like a bad idea."

"Like I don't know that."

"So let me add some peppermint schnapps. Tastes like Girl Scouts, and it's gotta be better than whatever alternative is running through your head right now."

The one where Mary Anne Spier brought her college friend, Fred Burkle, home to meet her family.

"Knock before coming into my bedroom?"

Fred whispers, "I'll fix it so we can lock your door," and a giggle escapes. Dawn shoots me an evil look, but for once I don't care.

Jeff looks like he's about to say something embarrassing when Sharon suggests we eat, and the usual horrible veggie vs. meat shaming session ensues, with Fred bewilderedly holding my hand while Dawn glares at us both.

I should tell Dawn, "We'll talk later," but mostly I want it to be later so we can be alone in my suddenly-locking bedroom, where I won't have to explain anything.

I've been going around to all the people who've been doing this, and asking them about the same story, since I can't remember who didn't write it: that hardboiled detective/romance novel with the alien invasion in Renaissance Venice.
