fannish5 for this week:
(and because obviously, I could never pick just one, I'm going for top three.)
1. Who is your favorite animated character? Aunt Slappy from Animaniacs, Francine Frenski from Arthur and Rocky from The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Why? Aunt Slappy because I'm going to be like that when I get old. Francine because she's such a tomboy and because she and Muffy are going to have a huge torrid love affair that will end badly for everyone in about six years, because she's just genuinely cool. And Rocky because he's voiced by a chick and is so androgynous and... okay, he's a squirrel. Still! He was my First True Love. Well, one of them. And he and Bullwinkle have this odd slashy dynamic going on.
2. Who is your favorite television character? Jack O'Neill from Stargate SG-1 Trance Gemini from Andromeda*. Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG-1 Why?They're pretty. Obviously, I have no shallow reasons whatsoever for liking these characters. So Jack. He's pretty--er, I mean, deep character reasons. Because he's such a guy. Because he's campy and complex, because he was born old and has the mind of a child. Because he's a Cubs fan. Because of "Shades of Gray," "Cold Lazarus," "Window of Opportunity," "Message in a Bottle," "Chain Reaction," "The Fifth Man," and yes, "Revelations." Because he cares about his team a lot more than he's supposed to. Trance because she's purple and has a tail and is Trance-like and beautiful and innocent and not-innocent and because she keeps the crew of the Andromeda as pets. Because of "Forced Perspective", "The Pearls That Were His Eyes," "A Heart for Falsehood Framed," "Angel Dark, Demon Bright," and... because she's Trance. Daniel. He's Daniel. I need no other reason.
3. Who is your favorite (no longer in production) television character? Oooh, lucked out with this one. Logan Cale from Dark Angel. Aeryn Sun from Farscape. Pa'u Zotah Zhaan from Farscape Why?They're pretty. Obviously, I have no shallow reasons whatsoever for liking these characters. Logan because he's geeky and sweet and cute and the kind of male person I'd like if I liked male people like that. And because he's idealistic and the 'ship is tragic and beautiful. Aeryn because she's Aeryn. Because she kicks so much ass and because she would be okay and sane except for being in love with John. But it was being in love that John that made her the person she is. Because she's just incredibly cool in so many ways. Zhaan because she's a priest and yet she's actually interesting. Because she's spiritual and that's important but that's not all she is and she's multi-faceted, and because of how she views the crew of Farscape. Because of "Dream a Little Dream" and "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Die Me Dichotomy" and "...Different Destinations."
4.Who is your favorite television ensemble cast? The cast of Farscape. The cast of Andromeda* minus Dylan. The cast of Stargate SG-1Why? (If you don't have one/want to imagine the possibilities, assemble one and explain your choices and the fandoms they are from). That was a remarkably easy question. Because those are the three shows that I watch that have ensemble casts. But seriously.... Andromeda because they're so fabulously eclectic. Because they don't always play well together, because Beka is an awesome captain, because they all need each other and don't want to admit it. Farscape because they almost never play well together. Because in spite of everything, they care about each other. Because they're all played by fabulous actors. Because it's simply a fabulous show, and everyone gets an arc. And Stargate SG-1 because they play too well together and they're all so in love with each other. Because "that's not incest. That's just SG-1." Because, okay, maybe it's campy and maybe it's fluffy, but the actors care about each other and the characters love each other. Because all the dynamics have so much potential, even if Sam & Teal'c continues to be the most frustratingly under-used dynamic.
5. Who is your favorite movie character?David from A.I. Jenny Honey from Matilda. Lotte from Being John Malkovich Why? I may have cheated a bit on this question; I had to look up two out of the three names. David is the robot from A.I.; he gets points because he made me cry. Miss Honey because, like Matilda, I was totally in love with her. And Lotte is the wife from BJM, [spoilers]the slightly nutty woman who fell in love with Maxine and sort of got addicted to the being-in-a-male-body thing. because she's just so messed up and genderqueer. And insane. Love the insanity thing.
6. Who is your favorite book character?Sherlock Holmes. Bishop Blackie Ryan from the novels by Andrew Greeley. Walter Blythe from Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside by L.M. Montgomery. Why? Definitely added this question, and yes, I know these aren't fandom books (though I'm working on writing fic for two of them anyhow.) Holmes, because he's so repressed and neurotic and brilliant in a very beautiful way. Because he never lets on that he cares. Because he's got John Watson so whipped. Because he has the capacity for great evil, because he's vain and petty and gets off on Watson fawning over him. Because he has terribly unhealthy habits. Because someone needs to slash him with Moriarty. Because I've just spawned a plot bunny. Blackie because he's.... Blackie. Because he's cute and innocuous and funny and adorable and unflappable and deeply faithful and because he slashes so wonderfully with Sean Cardinal Cronin. And Walter. Because he's the romantic poet of every girl's childish dreams, and because [spoilers for Rilla] his death is just so tragic and meaningful and because he's not a coward. Not at all.. And because the scene with Alice in Anne of Ingleside is just too sweet.
* By Andromeda, I mean Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, Robert Hewitt Wolfe's Andromeda, S1 Andromeda. In other words, pre-Orobouros Andromeda. In other words, purple!Trance. Among other things.
