fight! fight!
Jan. 20th, 2003 04:57 pmI had an argument with my logic professor (also my advisor) today about a certain logic problem. I KNOW I'm right. I was raised with this type of problem; metaquestions and self-reflective liars are my forte. I am completely at home with this type of problem, and this particular problem I'd seen many times and in many forms before. But for some unknown reason, my professor is being aggravating. And wrong. Grr.

Re:
Date: 2003-01-20 07:12 pm (UTC)Batman has been contained in a room from which there are exactly two doors and no other means of escape. One door, if opened, will cause the destruction of Gotham City. The other door is safe. In front of each door stands a man. It is given that one man is a consistent liar (he always lies) and the other a consistent truth-teller (he always tells the truth), but it is not known which is which. Perfect knowledge and accurate self-reflection are assumed. Batman is allowed to ask one question of any length to either one of the men. His task, of course, is to determine which door is safe.
Multiple solutions are possible. Says me. There is only one solution (and its inverse). Says my professor. (my dad and my roommate agree with me)
