Why, why, why am I compelled to send Daniel to Egypt? There are how many thousands of countries in the world, and two of them that ever show up in Stargate fanfic, and those two are... the US (sort of unavoidable) and Egypt. Can I be more trite and unoriginal?

Well, I guess I could. But I'm not going to try.

How about the jungles of Central America? Hmm, hot sticky, sweaty Daniel with a machete! That's been done, too, huh? Siberia! No, that's been done. Paris *sigh*. Amsterdam, his grandad is Dutch, you know. Send him to Iraq to try and hunt down all the Babylonian antiquities that went missing when the American and British soldiers were meant to be safe-gurading them when they took Baghdad. The Aussie Outback! Nah, Egypt is just right, you can't go wrong with old Egypt. Daniel and Egypt, they're like the Sex Pistols and safety pins.

Turkey for one, because after having spent five minutes in my history 229 (which the is the ancient near east to the death of Alexander the Great), I realize that Turkey and the area known as "Asia Minor" is ripe for someone to stick in all new Goa'uld.

I mean, sites like Catal Huyuk in Turkey just *beg* to be added to the Stargate canon.

Okay, yeah, that was just really esoteric. But I'm telling you, the Goa'uld may have farmed Egypt for slaves, but chances are they also did a good bit of harvesting in the Fertile Crescent, especially in Mesopotamia (Sumer and Babylon especially).

So yeah, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Israel, all good places.

Also, we see evidence of Goa'uld influences on Asia proper.

There are references in China to "Sage Kings" and other such legendary monarchs. And a Yu. Ha!

So yes, China also is another good place to send Daniel.

I would also suggest maybe somewhere in Africa, because the ancient Egyptian empire did stretch into places which are no longer under modern Egyptian control.

Goa'uld influences are everywhere. Possibly Britain, France, Germany. I can see him also going to some slavic countries, especially Romania, Bosnia, etc.

I see perhaps a cave in Germany having some strange paintings on it...

Stonehenge. That's another good site. I mean, why in the dickens has this show not addressed Stonehenge?!

Canada? We could send him to Sweden, Norway, etc, to investigate a dig of Viking artifacts which yield a piece of Asgard technology.

But, hey, you just *can't* go wrong with Egypt. At all. Egypt is a good solid, classic plot device in all Stargate fic. And trust me, it is not trite and unoriginal if you write it well.

I wonder, are there more fic where Daniel goes to Egypt or Daniel goes to Abydos?

Egypt is kind of the obvious answer if you want to take Daniel out of the country--direct ties to the Stargate program, the Goa'uld, and possibly Daniel's life or childhood.

Yes, there are certainly innumerable other places he could go in relation to the project, Egypt is kind of the "logicalest" one to think of first unless you've got specific other stuff planned.
