Wow. "he'll never love her best" is what makes this hard for me; Faith would have a clear rival for Giles' affections in Buffy. It's hard to locate that dynamic in other characters, although maybe this draws on some sort of personal quasi-canon of yours: Buffy has a rival for Giles' affection in Ethan, or Faith has a rival in Wes' in Angel, or some such.
