In some of the longer Fred/Kaylee, I've written Fred as teaching Kaylee some of the book-learning she has about things Kaylee just knows instinctively, which is one of my favorite contrasts to work with (and also mentor!kink, yay)... so yes, I do think it could go both ways. :)
