That's interesting; I didn't know he'd recorded it. I remember it by someone else, though, way back in the late sixties or early seventies when it first came out.

Okay, the version I knew was recorded by Terry Jacks in 1974. The lyrics are by Rod McKuen and are themselves a translation of the French tune "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man") by Jacques Brel. Thought I recalled a Jacques Brel connection.
