I have cramps and they hurt and I'm tired and I can't drink coffee because I just told everyone I was cutting back and I can't go to bed because of my new improved lifestyle plan but my uterus hurts and I need to write Secret Slasha.

Moments later: okay, decided to take Ibuprofin and drink herbal tea and change the pairing of my Secret Slasha story, and all these things are helpful.

So, haz a poll:

Is there a correlation between sexuality/sexual orientation/sexual preference and your fic writing habits? Many discussions of "why I slash" suggest that there is.

This is prompted by a specific question, but first I want some poll data. There are three polls, one for women (girls), one for men (boys), and one for people whose genders don't fit in those boxes. You can see the results of the polls that don't apply to you by null-voting -- hitting "submit poll" without ticking any boxes.

If you realize you've made a mistake, you can go back -- click the poll number, choose "fill out poll" and voila, you can change your answers.

The questions are phrased "I write a good deal of." Feel free to interpret this relatively: if you write one fic a year but it's always boyslash, that's "a good deal of boyslash." But if you write thirty fics a year and one of them is boyslash, that's probably not "a good deal."

Pimp?

3:24 am -- 1268 words written. Fic is basically outlined. Watched crucial character episode, now have "Least Complicated" on repeat.

4:27 am -- some # of words written in various scenes. Watching Taray stuff now. Oh, S5!Buffy/Giles, why so awesome? (Dynamic complex and hurty, but mostly -- serious, serious chemistry.) Oh yes. Tara is awesome too.

... in my head Tara has the same birthday as me. (Airdate 11/7 and my birthday is 11/3, so not entirely out of the question!)

5:35 -- BUFFY/GILES. SERIOUSLY. Am watching OMwF and oh, that -- rueful resigned look he gives her in "If We're Together." <3<3<3<3<3<3.

Have I ever mentioned I love this show a lot?

6:02 am -- hi Joss. I love OMWF but do you know that "Standing" practically reduced me to tears? Oh, favorite song ever. What's yours? )

7:07 am: Also, I made myself an icon.

There are about 3500 words in the .txt, but a lot of them are outliney stuff, not publishable words. Must drink more coffee and try to write seriously. Seriously!

The question is where you write fanfic; I mean... primarily. I sometimes brainstorm in a notebook or write there if I'm away from keyboard; I do some line-editing in Semagic because it has a spellcheck, but I do most of my writing and revision in NoteTab.

If you always use a two-step process (e.g. on paper first, then type it into a word processor or text editor for heavy revision), you can tell me in comments. And, obvs., if you checked any of the "other" options.

_minis

I'm running the current round of [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis. The poll is open here. After I posted the poll, WITHIN MINUTES four people had voted that they would definitely participate (it's an addiction). No one's voted that way since.

My feeling is that we spend most of our our time anxiously refreshing our flists to see if there will be _minis this week. I know I do!

Shockingly, it looks like this will be the Faith round.

Girl and I were talking last night (well, I was talking, girl was mocking me listening). There's [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis and [livejournal.com profile] maleslashminis, and the theorized but non-existent het_minis. Which unfortunately rules out Illyria, mostly. Hence, there should be an ungendered_characters_minis. We could write about:
+Illyria
+The First
+The Senior Partners
+TPTB
+Wesley's bleached blond(e)

Ways I am spending my Saturday:
+Cleaning the living room
+Doing laundry
+Going through huge piles of crap.

Ways I am not spending my Saturday:
+Mainlining BSG
+Writing "Pinpricks"

See also [livejournal.com profile] kindkit's post here.

[livejournal.com profile] kindkit and I are planning a forty-plus-smutathon, and right now we're brainstorming popular fandoms with at least a handful of major characters over age-forty.

So. What fandoms have characters who are canonically 40 or older you'd like or love to write pr0n about? (Note that characters who are older than forty but canonically don't age or have younger bodies -- Spike, Moaning Myrtle, the Tenth Doctor, Methos, Leo Wyatt -- are ineligable.)

Yes, some of these options are clearly "fandoms" only in my brain.

[Poll #1044785]

If you're going to discuss that last question in the comments, please generously mark large spoilers for the last two seasons as I'm trying to avoid them.

[this post contains spoilers for the seventh Harry Potter book. And I apologize for adding more useless Harry Potter talk to your flist. Also, there's a completely daft poll.]

In non-Harry Potter news, [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis is opening up for another round.

Name five songs from musicals, whatever comes into your head first.

There are about a dozen things I want to say, which perhaps justifies posting where nothing else will.

1. On the obvious: I think it's clear I'm no longer "officially" away from anything, as I've been reading and commenting on the full flist all weekend for something like three out of the past four weekends. Because I am obsessive about intentionality (though not perhaps so good on the follow-through), I feel a need to justify my journaling activity even though it's really mostly whimmy of late. I think (I can't be sure of anything) that I will never again be as active on LiveJournal or in fandom as I was from fall of 2004 to fall of 2005. I don't have the time, and I don't have the energy. On the other hand, I still feel I'll never *not* be part of LiveJournal and of fandom. Fannish response to texts is part of who I am now, and I still think every day, every moment "how shall I discuss this on LiveJournal?" even when I know I won't post about it at all.

2. That said, for the first time in months, I'm actually working on fannish projects. Admittedly they mostly fall into the "audience of one" category, but I am okay with that. As I usually do at this time of year, I'm thinking in remix titles.

3. My remix story was written by [livejournal.com profile] alixtii. I'm shocked, I tell you, completely and utterly shocked. My own remix, which I resposted yesterday, garnered almost no response at all, so I'm not sure I'm even justified in mentioning my remix strategy or discussing what went wrong (and I feel that something did go wrong, not in the prose per se, but in the execution of the brilliant idea I had that never quite made it into words because I was distracted). Maybe next year I'll be brilliant (and less procrastinatey. And writing a Paper of Doom at the time. So maybe brilliance is out of the question.)

I remixed [livejournal.com profile] yhlee and possibly the best way to describe "The Unicorn Remyth" is to say that it's a simple pastiche with point of view swap. I retained all the ambiguities of the original, because I think ambiguity is important, but as a result the fic was inaccessible in a way. *shrug*

I'm still very pleased with the fic I received and it's inspiring multiple thought trajectories about authorship, autonomy, and subjectivity.

4. [Poll #976217]

5. I have a paper to be writing, which would explain the blathering all over LiveJournal, of course.

6. I just finished rereading books 2-6 of Harry Potter and have now started on book 1. I expect I might cycle through them until there's book 7 available. I also might work on the WiP. Maybe.

7. I have half-finished (or in some cases half-started) posts on the many fannish discussions that have happened in my absence.

8. I'm watching the first season of Six Feet Under again. The first go-round I hadn't seen Sports Night. I concede, Peter Krause is a brilliant actor.

9. I'm bubbling with stories to tell, petrified that I've lost the voices, and still deeply conflicted about the extended leave of absence my brain has taken from fandom. But at least the stories are still there, if scared to come out.

Well. Not quite a dozen, but that will be enough to be going on with.

ETA: I did not actually realize, when posting this, that it really has been four months. Huh.
